Interstate 579 (abbreviated I-579) is a north-south Interstate Highway auxiliary route.
The northern terminus of I-579 is at Interstate 279 on the Veterans Bridge, while the southern terminus splits into the Liberty Bridge and Boulevard of the Allies, which connects to eastbound Interstate 376.
Construction on Interstate 579 was not completed until 1989, with the opening of the Veterans Bridge, and the opening of Interstate 579 was concurrent with the opening of an extension of Interstate 279 into the North Hills region of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area.

The route will begin at Pennsylvania 60 (future Interstate 376) west of the city at the main entrance to the Pittsburgh International Airport, turn west and then south and then southeast to meet the proposed Pennsylvania 43/Mon-Fayette Expressway (High Priority Corridor 31).
From there Interstate 576 will follow the Mon-Fayette Expressway north to meet Interstate 376 (Parkway East) at two interchanges: one in Monroeville/Penn Hills and one in the City of Pittsburgh near Second Avenue and Bates Street in Hazelwood.
Interstate 576 would thus end at Interstate 376 at the eastern end as well as the western end.

The highway, originally designated as I-280 when the Pennsylvania Turnpike between the Ohio state line and Valley Forge was I-80S, received its present number in 1974 when I-80S became I-76.

The objective is, of course, to facilitate travel on the Interstate network with the simplest and most logical numbering arrangement providing continuity and a uniform pattern of marking.

According to the bill, U.S. Routes 22/30 from Interstate 79 to the Route 60 interchange and Route 60 from Routes 22/30 to Interstate 80 in Mercer County would be made part of the interstate system once the federal transportation secretary determines they meet interstate system design standards.
If sections of the highways don't meet the interstate standards, they would not be able to take on the interstate designation until improvements are made.
The bill leaves out the portion of the Parkway West from Interstate 79 to Downtown, currently Interstate 279, which Roddey also has sought to be renamed Interstate 376.

However, the extension to Interstate 376 from that point is under dispute because it infringes on several heavily populated neighborhoods.
As for the section in Pennsylvania, it is under construction between U.S. 40 and Pennsylvania State Route 51 and proposed between Pennsylvania State Route 51 and Interstate 376 and south from U.S. 40 near Uniontown to Interstate 68 in WV.
Given the fact that it is too long for a 3di and the fact that Pittsburgh is served by only two 2-digit interstates (Interstate 79 and Interstate 76), I would not doubt if local leaders are praying for a 2di designation -- though none seem to be left within the basic grid pattern.
