Interstate 280 is the Junipero Serra Freeway, starting in San Jose/Silicon Valley at the U.S. 101/Interstate 680 interchange and continuing north to its northern terminus at Pacific Bell Ballpark in San Francisco.
Interstate 280, meanwhile, continues northeast on a section of double-decked freeway that was damaged severely during the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake.

In Southern California, the highway is a heavily traveled commuter route serving the west side of the greater Los Angeles area.
Another scenic portion of Highway 101 within California is in Humboldt County, where it travels through Humboldt Redwoods State Park and a portion of the highway is known as the Avenue of the Giants for the huge, centuries-old redwood trees that can be found there.
As of 2004, the highway's "northern" terminus is in Olympia, Washington at an intersection with Interstate 5.

The state has proposed extending I-380 westward to CA 1, and the 280 interchange shows room for this; and this might account for the extra 2 miles in the official length.
On December 24, 1968, it was given Interstate status from I-280 to the San Francisco airport.
I-380 was originally planned to extend to Cedar Falls (in fact, the 1978 Federal Route Log lists I-380 as 79.56 miles), but in 1982 the city of Waterloo traded those funds in for other projects (per the Interstate Substitution ("trade-in") rules established in 1973).

The sign gantry for the Route 380 ramps westbound into I-280 is very wide; this is to cover both the ramps heading to 280 and the mainline carriageway that would've gone into Pacifica.
In October 1958, the designation I-380 was proposed for the Embarcadero Freeway, which was later approved as I-480, downgraded to Route 480, and ultimately relinquished and destroyed.
California Highway Patrol Officer Larry J. Jaramillo died in the line of duty in a traffic collision on Route 395 at the Kern County San Bernardino County line, while returning from court in Inyo County on June 22, 1993.

The Western EMAP Northern California Pilot Study Area (NCPSA) is a contiguous tract of land located in the mountainous and coastal areas of the northwestern portion of the State of California and southernmost Oregon along all but the easternmost extent of the California-Oregon border.
South of the Klamath Mountains, the Coast Ranges, which are situated close to the edge of the continent and extend from Humboldt County to the southernmost extreme of the study area, form a series of low mountains that parallel the coast.
The average annual precipitation varies greatly within the study area, ranging from an approximate low of 380 mm (15 in.) in the Modoc Plateau region to well in excess of 2500 mm (100 in.) in the temperate rainforests of coastal mountains on either side of the California-Oregon border.

Instead of pulling over to fix the problem, the men stuck their heads out the windows so they could see the road and kept going at about 55 mph, officials said.
