One traffic lane on I-494 was blocked late in the morning commute by a stalled car at 12th Avenue.
The usual congested spots, such as Interstate 35E coming through the construction zone north of St. Paul, and I-94 entering St. Paul from the east, made for slow freeway speeds but were free of crashes.

The project’s official completion date is set for September 15th, but most drivers on I-494 have already gotten what they have been waiting for: the opening of the new lanes between Hwy 5 and Carlson Parkway, which occurred August 31st.
To commemorate the project’s completion a “ribbon cutting” ceremony was held on the Orchard Road bridge over I-494 at on Wednesday, September 6th.
Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty and other local officials attended to express their appreciation to the workers who got the project completed in near record time, and to the residents along the project corridor who had to deal with so much construction occurring in their backyards, in some cases literally.

While the Highwood Drive intersection just south of 494 is one problem spot, the service roads that parallel the north and south sides of 494 create even more of a problem.
Norris said he would prefer another option: to go ahead and build bridges on 169 north and south of 494 to span the service roads, thus making it possible to eliminate the lights and still maintain through travel on the service roads.
Though none of the work would be wasted -- all of it would be necessary for the eventual grand plan -- the feds did not like the rerouting of 494 east traffic along local streets for a mile to reach 169 north.
