It was the longest interstate highway of its kind – measuring in at 120.74 miles (194.40 kilometers) – until its title was taken by Interstate 476 in 1996.
I-495 is often regarded as the outermost boundary of the Greater Boston region (see the quote below): its northern extremity is close to the New Hampshire border; its southern end is just north of Cape Cod; west of 495 is the Worcester area and Central Massachusetts.
The stretch of 495 north and east of Route 2 until its terminus at Interstate 95 in Salisbury is also the main limited access highway connecting the communities of the urbanized region along the Merrimack River.

Interstate 295 constitutes a 9.10-mile routing between the Bruckner Interchange in the Bronx to Hillside Avenue near Hollis.
The routing between Interstate 95 and the Long Island Expressway was planned as Interstate 495 for a brief time in 1958, with Interstate 78 entailing the Clearview Expressway south of the L.I.E. By December of 1958, the Interstate 78 designation saw extension northward to the planned Throgs Neck Bridge and Expressway.
Interstate 78 was to travel east from the Holland Tunnel across the unconstructed Lower Manhattan Expressway to the unconstructed Bushwick Expressway, partially-built Nassau Expressway, and partially-built Clearview Expressway.

The remaining sections of I-495 in Virginia, along with the entire length of I-495 in Maryland, were built with six traffic lanes (three in each direction).
In 1986, the interchange between I-95, I-495, and US 1 (EXITS 25-27) in College Park was rebuilt with a new two-lane, high-speed ramp carrying I-95 onto the Beltway, new collector-distributor (C/D) roads for southbound traffic, and a new park-and-ride lot in the right-of-way for the unbuilt Northeast Freeway (I-95).
The I-495 designation was retired officially from this section, while the completed sections of I-95 (the Shirley Highway, Southwest Freeway, and Center Leg Freeway) were re-designated I-395.

There is considerable congestion heading south where I-95, I-295 and I-495 merge where you have local and long distance traffic coming together, depending on the time and day traffic can crawl along well below the speed limit to the Maryland border creating a huge problem at the toll plaza.
South of the I-95 / I-295 / I-495 merge, the "Delaware Turnpike" section of I-95 is a relatively safe highway where traffic (for the most part) flows freely, though the speed limit on the turnpike should be raised from 55 MPH to 65 MPH.

Proposed in 1958 as the current Interstate 79 alignment towards Erie, but would have turned to parallel the PA 99 alignment to end in Kearsarge.
Signed in 1964, but the only sections to see the designation was from Interstate 80 to Exit 22, and again from US 611 to Interstate 81.
