Interstate 495 (New York) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Interstate 495 (abbreviated I-495) runs 71.02 miles (114.34 km) entirely within New York state, from the Queens-Midtown Tunnel in New York City to Riverhead, New York, through the counties of New York, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk, ending just before the 'fish-tail' separation of the North and South Forks of eastern Long Island.
Previously, the LIE was New York State Route 495 to the east of the Clearview Expressway (Interstate 295), but in the 1980s the NY 495 signs were taken down and I-495 extended to the east end of the LIE.
Originally, I-495 was to stretch from the Queens Midtown Tunnel and I-278 to I-295, the Clearview Expressway.

Interstate 495 New Jersey/New York @ Interstate-Guide.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Former Interstate 495 in New Jersey and the west end of Manhattan island in New York City was originally planned as an east-west freeway to connect Interstate 95/New Jersey Turnpike with midtown Manhattan, Queens, and the western portion of the Long Island Expressway.
Only the New York section of Interstate 495 east of the Queens Midtown Tunnel remained in the Interstate system, and that Interstate was extended to cover the remaining distance of the Long Island Expressway heading east.
So in the 1980s, the short section of freeway that once carried the Interstate 495 banner in New Jersey was demoted to New Jersey 495, once plans were officially abandoned to connect the New Jersey portion with Interstate 495 in New York.
