As a result of this tremendous extension northward, Interstate 540 was forced to share a three-mile duplex with its parent, but the extension via Arkansas 540 was tremendous, with the rest of the addition consisting of a new freeway parallel to U.S. 71 northward through the Boston Mountains.
Interstate 540 in its entirety is part of High Priority Corridor 1 and 72: North-South Corridor.
Although this interchange was never a terminal point for Interstate 540, it was the former southern end of Arkansas 540, and it may serve as a temporary southern end to a two-digit Interstate, pending when the section of Interstate 49 from Texarkana north to Fort Smith is constructed.

Today it is especially important for traffic going east on Interstate 40 which intends to turn northward on Interstate 75; this has greatly relieved congestion in downtown Knoxville.

The section of Interstate 540 that is proposed as the "Western Wake Expressway" from Holly Springs to the Research Triangle Park is not slated to commence construction until 2012, and the southern and western sections of the belt route may not be built until some time thereafter.
A flyover ramp connects eastbound Interstate 540 with northbound U.S. The connection from Triangle Town Center in North Raleigh to the U.S. 64/264 bypass in Knightdale is expected to open on December 31, 2006, or in early 2007.

540 does not have an inner/outer component, unlike I-440 and Charlotte's I-485; however, a precedent being set on new sections of I-485 will almost certainly be implemented on 540 at some point, where the freeway is signed as both inner/outer and with traditional cardinal directions.
Since 540 was originally planned to be a full Interstate and thus was built with the typical 90% federal funding for an Interstate, the Federal Highway Administration required NCDOT to no longer sign the new roadway as an Interstate.
The only problem with this setup is that the I-540 shields were already posted on the roadway, and DOT crews had to scramble to replace all the Interstate shields with NC 540 shields two weeks before the road opened.

An ongoing study of I-540 calls for widening of the highway's southern section to six lanes and widening to eight lanes is recommended, beginning near Lowell's southern city limits and stretching north to the highway's intersection with Walton Boulevard/Walnut Street.
That long-term relief may be better found through construction of a looping highway to the west, for instance.

The 0 mile marker is the interstate's junction with I-40, which, regardless of if this portion is signed east-west, as it is, or north-south, as the newer section is, should be past the Mile 14 marker.
I-540 is shown going in one direction, but not in the other, strongly suggesting this exit marks the terminus point.
Most of the interesting-looking bridges actually ARE 540, so they have to be seen from other roads, mainly US-71, which runs a parallel course just east of 540.

Interstate 49 construction between Lafatyette and Shreveport began in the early 1980s and was completed by the mid-1990s.

Interstate 540 and all the exits between Fayetteville and Bentonville must be overhauled by 2024 just to keep the traffic moving at an acceptable pace, according to the draft of a two-year study of the interstate.
A draft of an Interstate 540 corridor improvement study recommends moving a section of the interstate west near U.S. 62, repositioning Futrall Drive and its exit ramps, and building a looping ramp to get traffic from Sixth Street onto the interstate.

I-540 was designated the "John Paul Hammerschmidt Highway" in honor of the former U.S. representative from Arkansas, in attendance at today’s ceremony, who helped launch the project.
I-540 will cut 20 minutes from the the current one-hour travel time between I-40 and Fayetteville, Secretary Slater said, cutting fuel costs for drivers and commercial shippers.

BENTONVILLE -- Monday's unveiling of an Interstate 540 study draft that calls for widening the highway to six or eight lanes in places, reworking seven overpasses and revamping interchanges spurred debate over a western bypass in Northwest Arkansas.
Buying right of way and improving interchanges on I-540 between Sixth Street in Fayetteville and Arkansas 72 in Bentonville would cost an estimated $350 million in today's dollars, according to Edward Cain Jr., manager of Parsons Corp., the Memphis, Tenn., firm hired to perform the study.

Having been replaced by Interstate 540 as the main thoroughfare between the northwest corner of Arkansas and Interstate 40, the main artery through the state, U.S. 71 is now free of traffic congestion and better able to show off its scenery.
But the two roads combined, U.S. 71 and I-540, are exact opposites that form the perfect scenic loop.
U.S. 71 is immediately east of and shares a terminus with I-540, which was designated an Arkansas Scenic Byway in 1999.

Relief for all those "stacked and backed" commuters was supposed to come from I-540 and the 64 Bypass that is now plowing through the woods.
As strange as it sounded to many commuters, there was no plan to connect I-540 and the 64 Bypass until now.
Plans for I-540 were drawn in 1989, plans for the 64 Bypass came later and the two plans did not meet.
