The Capital Beltway (Interstate 495) is a freeway-class interstate highway which circles the Washington, DC area.
In April, 2005, the Virginia Department of Transportation signed an agreement with two private companies to build high-occupancy toll lanes on the stretch of the Beltway between Springfield and Georgetown Pike.
Originally, the exits in Virginia also were numbered starting with 1, which caused problems because there were some exits that had the same number in Maryland and Virginia.

Originally Virginia Highway 350, the full-length of the Shirley Highway was opened on Sept. 6, 1949 from a point south of the Pentagon to Woodbridge, Virginia along what is now the Interstate 95 corridor.
The jumble of highways in Virginia where I-395, I-95, and the Capital Beltway meet is officially called the "Springfield Interchange," and unofficially as The Mixing Bowl.
A noteworthy feature, at least from the standpoint of local commuters, is a reversible, barrier-separated HOV facility, with its own entrances and exits, provided as a third roadway of Interstates 395 and 95 between Washington, D.C., and Virginia State Highway 234 in Prince William County, Virginia.

Interstate 66 is planned to be routed via the Cumberland Parkway and the Daniel Boone Parkway in southern Kentucky.
Interstate 66, as originally proposed, was supposed to turn northeast in West Virginia to connect to the already-existing Interstate 66 in northern Virginia.
VDOT indicates that Corridor 3 in Virginia consists of Interstate 64 from Beckley, W. Va. to Clifton Forge, Va.; U.S. 220 from Clifton Forge to Roanoke, Va.; and U.S. 460 from Roanoke to Hampton Roads.

In 1981, a portion of I-70 leading west from proposed I-170 was cancelled, leaving I-170 and the remaining portion of I-70 disconnected from existing I-70.
However, I-595 was cancelled in July 1983; other transportation needs in Baltimore were so great that even its 10% share of interstate work was judged to be better spent on other projects.
Interstate money became available when several planned interstate segments were deleted in Baltimore, about the mid-1980's.

Boston's Interstate 695 was a proposed 5.3-mile, 8 lane, $200M (1970 dollars) inner beltway, from I-95 northwest to I-90.
Interstate 695 would have followed the Cobbs Creek Expressway from I-95 to the proposed West Philadelphia Expressway, then east to the Schuylkill.

I-695 is a secret route that connects I-395 and I-295; and I-595 to Annapolis is better known as US 50/301.
I-395, a skyway into downtown Baltimore, is the shortest three-digit Interstate route in the country.
I-95 was also supposed to go through Boston, Massachusetts instead of around it but locals nixed the idea of having the highway go through the city.

Interstate money (90% federal funding as part of the national Interstate highway system) became available when several planned Interstate segments were deleted in Baltimore, in the early-1980s.
According to a Traffic Engineer at the MDOT SHA Office of Traffic and Safety, he agreed with my analysis that I have had here since 1997, and he said, "we did not feel that either the posting in the field or the noting on a map would serve any useful purpose for the traveling public".

This highway was created as a toll-free alternative to the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
I-68's designation was originally intended for the US 50 freeway between Washington, DC and Annapolis, MD. However, I-595 was the number assigned to the freeway, and I-68 ended up as a replacement for US 48 (which has since reappeared as a new surface road in Virginia and West Virginia).
In the future, I-68 might be extended into Ohio, ending at either Dayton or Cincinnati.
