Interstate 74 is planned to enter North Carolina from Virginia along Interstate 77.

The two interstate sections are from I-77 Exit 101 to U.S. Highway 52 near Mt. Airy (12 miles) (there are also I-74 signs along the 5 miles of Interstate 77 between the Virginia border and Exit 101) and the U.S. Highway 220 freeway from Business U.S. Highway 220/NC 134 to Candor (with I-73) (23 miles).

Interstate 73 (abbreviated I-73) is a main route of the Interstate Highway System, currently located entirely within the U.S. state of North Carolina.
Closely related is the extension of Interstate 74 from Cincinnati, Ohio east to Georgetown, South Carolina, with several concurrencies planned.
(I-74 will use I-77 through Virginia.) For the rest of its path through West Virginia, from Bluefield to Huntington, I-73 will follow U.S. Route 52, which is presently being upgraded to a four-lane divided highway as the King Coal Highway to Williamson and the TOLSIA Highway the rest of the way to Huntington.

I-74 would have follow the current I-80 from the cloverleaf junction in Colona (known as the "Big X") to the exit with I-280 in Davenport.
The Iowa-Illinois Memorial Bridge (now known by locals as simply the "I-74 bridge") actually predates I-74 itself; it was first built as a single span for US 6 in 1935, while the second span dates back from 1960.
Tolls were collected here until 1970, and I-74 was connected onto this bridge (which does not meet modern Interstate standards due to its lack of shoulders and 50-mph speed limit) in 1974.

Representative Mike McIntyre announced today that he supports efforts to bring the existing corridor of US 74 to interstate standards, completion of I-74, examining the possibility of extending I-20 from Florence, S.C, to Whiteville, and designating a new interstate spur from Chadbourn to Tabor City.
An interstate highway is critical to maximize the economic benefits of this investment by easier and quicker passenger and freight travel.
This potential interstate addition would connect I-74 at Whiteville, and serve as a major economic catalyst for several economically challenged counties.
