Interstate 77 was planned to end at I-85, but talk of extending 77 further south started soon after construction of the Interstate system got underway.
I-77 was built to accommodate this interchange back in the 1970s: the spread median widens here, and the northbound lanes are on naturally higher ground than the southbound lanes are, allowing for easy construction of an underpass.

I drove I-77 through the hill-climb area about 6 round trips; this is the Fancy Gap area from one mile north of the N.C. border to where I-77 reaches the summit of the Blue Ridge Mountains 6 miles north of there.

For 34 years the policy of the Interstate Highway System has been to require that States that share highways in common agree to their numbering, and that they agree before changing any highway numbers.
Interstate 280 opened in 1956 as part of the Toledo-Detroit Expressway, which also included what is now I-75 from the I-280 terminus to US 24 in Flat Rock, Michigan; and a segment south of the Ohio Turnpike, ending at US 20/23.
In August 1958, Ohio requested that I-77 be truncated to Cleveland, I-280 be applied to the Toledo loop, and Michigan's portion of former I-77 be called I-75E.
