Between I-80 and I-780, I-680 is the Luther E. Gibson Freeway, named after a state legislator (not the 15th century reformer or the acoustic guitar maker).
The revised I-78 was now to connect downtown Cleveland to I-80 (now I-76) southeast of Youngstown, using part of today's I-480, a new route along OH 14 from Streetsboro to Edinburgh, an overlap with I-80 (now I-76), and all of I-680.
In 1958, the Iowa portion of this highway, at least between I-80 and I-29, was to be called I-680.

Built mostly during the 1960's and early 1970's, I-80 has a minimum of three through traffic lanes in each direction, with additional lanes through areas of high elevation in the west and high congestion in the east.
Increasingly, I-80 through the entire state has become important route for commuters from the Poconos to New York City and northeastern New Jersey, so additional lanes in western New Jersey cannot be ruled out at a future date.
The pavement is a different story, particularly along the highway's eastern stretches, but the NJDOT already is addressing this issue with a major reconstruction of the local and express lanes through Bergen County.

This is the "freeway entrance" sign assembly from the south junction of CA-89 wt I-80 heading north to eastbound I-80 in Truckee (Exit 185).
This is on I-80 eastbound approaching the new I-80/California 89 North/CA-267/Truckee interchange at Exit 188A-B. The old exit for CA-267 south is Exit 188A.
They were placed after the completion of the carpool lane on the same stretch of road and I believe the sign replacement was eventually made a part of the carpool lane project.

First let me say that if I-80 were the first highway I had to do, I would never have started this project.
It also has I-180 in Cheyenne, which is an interstate with traffic lights (thanks to Mark Bozanich for pointing this out to me).
It can be argued that I-80 goes all of the way to the George Washington Bridge, but I think that's just silly.

I'm planning a late summer cross-country trip and in the interest of speed I am considering using Interstate 80 through Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming.
You also need to factor in the time that your going to spend fixing flats that you get from riding Interstate shoulders - they are covered with small, sharp bits of wire from truck tires that will give you repeated flats and fits.
It is my understanding that bikes are allowed on Utah interstates only where a reasonable alternative is NOT available.

The 2006-2010 transportation plan calls for improvements to I-80 (as well as I-29 and I-480) in Council Bluffs.
Plans for widening I-80 between I-380 and IA 1 in the Iowa City area to six lanes are also part of the transportation plan.
This was before AASHTO decided to ban most lettered suffixes on Interstate highways in 1980; only the I-35E/W splits in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN, and Dallas and Fort Worth, TX, remain.
