Interstate 81 (abbreviated I-81) is an interstate highway in the eastern part of the United States.
Its southern terminus is at Interstate 40 near Dandridge, Tennessee; its northern terminus is on Wellesley Island (near Fishers Landing, New York) at the Canadian border where the Thousand Islands Bridge connects it to Ontario Highway 401, the main freeway leading from Windsor-Detroit and Toronto to Montréal.

Interstate 481 (abbreviated I-481) is a spur of Interstate 81 to the east of Syracuse, New York.
It connects with I-81 in the city's southern end and again in the suburb of North Syracuse.
After crossing I-81 in North Syracuse, I-481 continues northwest as NY 481 to the cities of Fulton and Oswego, terminating at the intersection with NY 104.

Interstate 81 in Virginia traverses 325.51 miles (including the 8.01 mile overlap with I-77, and the 29.91 mile overlap with I-64) from the Tennessee border in the City of Bristol to the West Virginia border in Frederick County.
The terrain I-81 crosses is varied, with rolling to mountainous terrain in the southern half, and rolling to gently rolling Shenandoah Valley terrain on the northern half.
