Interstate 84 runs from an intersection with Interstate 5 at Portland, Oregon to an intersection with Interstate 80 at —roughly the same route as the Oregon Trail.
Starting in Portland, the interstate runs through the Columbia River Gorge alongside the Columbia River Highway to The Dalles, then continues along the Columbia River to Boardman, at which point it veers off in a southeasterly direction, crosses the Blue Mountains, and continues toward Ontario at the Idaho border.
Crossing the "heel" of the Idaho "boot", I-84 passes through Boise and Twin Falls, continuing on to the southeast and the border with Utah.

Originally, I-84 was to be multiplexed with I-87 between the New York State Thruway in Newburgh and Beacon, where a new north-south I-87 freeway was to be constructed south to Elmsford, Westchester County.
As traffic increased on I-84 (and the route was extended west to Scranton), chronic backups on either side of the two-lane Newburgh-Beacon Bridge soon appeared, prompting Federal and state officials to approve final construction of a parallel Newburgh-Beacon span in 1975.
In 1995, the speed limit on I-84 from the Delaware River (New York-Pennsylvania border) east to EXIT 7 (I-87 / NY 300) in Newburgh was increased to 65 MPH.

I-84 is now 10 to 12 lanes in East Hartford, eight lanes (including HOV) to Vernon, and six lanes to the Massachusetts Turnpike in Sturbridge.
The portion of I-84 between East Hartford and the Massachusetts state line is part of the Wilbur Cross Highway, which opened in the 1940s as a two-lane highway, and as a four-lane divided highway from 1948 through 1954.

As anyone who drives I-84 also knows, the improvements are highly necessary as that road has become a terrifying experience for those who must use it.
Much has changed since I-84 and Route 8 were completed in the mid to late 60s.
