There are interstate highways in Hawaii, funded in the same way as in the other states, but entirely within Hawaii.
By initial planning, the Interstate system was desinged to be able to move traffic at speeds of 75 to 80 miles per hour except in limited stretches (such as steep mountain passes) where this would not be practical.
For example, part of California highway 17 connecting Oakland and San Jose was renamed as I-880 in the mid 1980s.

Auxiliary Interstate Highways are given three-digit route numbers, which consist of a single digit prefixed to the two-digit number of a primary Interstate highway, to designate spur or loop routes branching from either the primary route or one of its other auxiliary routes.
Interstate 238 near Oakland, California is one of two major exceptions to the numbering scheme, as no Interstate 38 exists.
On even-numbered Interstates, mileage increases to the east and decreases to the west (except on the I-90 portion of the New York State Thruway and the I-190 spur into O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, both of which count up going west); and on odd-numbered Interstates, mileage increases to the north and decreases to the south.

The Approach of California in Applying Its Law to Foreign Corporations.
He knew that California had laws and he took his risk of what they might be, when, as we must hold, he gave his assent to doing business there.
The practical effect of the statute was to disrupt interstate commerce, at considerable expense, by requiring railroad operators to break down and reassemble long trains at the Arizona state border.
Although California is quite aggressive in applying its corporation law to foreign corporations, its analysis is arguably vulnerable under the commerce clause, since corporations may be subjected to inconsistent regulations.

All Interstates are identified with a red, white, and blue shield: white numbering on a blue background, with a red top to the shield (also, the shield is slightly differently-shaped to the US route shields).
On maps or in official publications Interstate freeways are usually referred to in the form "I-880" or "Interstate 880", or the number-on-a-shield form.
California also doesn't have a usable milepost system -- the mileposts that do exist typically measure mileage from the nearest county line, which isn't all that useful to most people, and the mileposts are usually small and hard to see.

The uncertainty arose from the fact that most of the dead were crushed within their cars when an elevated section of the Interstate 880 highway in the Oakland area collapsed on to its lower tier during the evening rush hour.
Elsewhere in the city--with the exception of the I-880 collapse-- damage was less severe, in part because of strict building regulations but also because most of the city (other than the bay area) was built on rock rather than mud.
These differences ensured that the consequences of the earthquake were considerably less serious than those experienced in Soviet Armenia which was struck by an earthquake of a similar size in December 1988.
