By comparison, the Harbor Tunnel, opened in 1957, is the oldest of the three Harbor crossings (the Key Bridge, opened in 1977, is the third, and it carries the Interstate 695 Beltway across the harbor).

The original 1964 plan was for the viaduct to be I-895 and the bypass to be I-95, but as the bypass was delayed for so long, it was decided for continuity sake to give I-95 to the through route and I-495 to the bypass route, when completed.
