Interstate 93 is an interstate highway in the New England section of the United States.
Interstate 93 is famous for being reconstructed by the Big Dig, the most massive urban construction project in history.
No additional tolls have been placed upon use of Interstate 93, but as part of the Big Dig the Massachusetts Turnpike, a toll road and also Interstate 90 while it runs through the state, was extended to East Boston, the location of Logan Airport.

I-93 is the lifeline of New Hampshire as it is the only interstate to serve the White Mountains and major tourist areas in the northern part of the state.
I-93 through Concord is a 1950's / 1960's tight four- lane freeway that can become a bottleneck during holiday weekends and there has been talk of widening it up to as many as 8 lanes and possibly moving it to the other side of the Merrimac river.
I-93 through Franconia Notch, which was built in the mid-to-late 1980's, is a limited access parkway between two and four lanes, with easy access to all the attractions and spectacular scenery.

On January 17, 2003, the opening ceremony was held for a 1.3-mile tunnel section of the Dig, extending the Massachusetts Turnpike (Interstate 90) east to Logan Airport.
The next phase, taking the elevated Interstate 93 and putting it underground, was completed in two stages: the northbound lanes opened in March 2003 and the southbound lanes opened (in a temporary configuration) on December 20, 2003.
Remaining work still to be completed includes the refurbishment of the Dewey Square Tunnel and construction of final ramp configurations in the North End, at Leverett Circle, and in the South Bay interchange, plus reconstruction of the surface streets and establishment of new city and state parks.

In the right photo, the southbound I-93 ramp that was to be used for southbound I-695 was opened as EXIT 26A (MA 28) in 1999.
Commonly referred to as the "upper and lower decks of 93," the Somerville-Charlestown section of the Northern Expressway carries three lanes of northbound traffic on the upper deck, and three lanes of southbound traffic on the lower deck.
I-93 should be expanded to eight lanes from Wilmington north to the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border.

Interstate 515 was known only as the U.S. 93-95 freeway as recently as 1993, but it was commissioned as an Interstate highway when the freeway was completed to bypass Henderson in 1995.
Interstate 515 is currently involved in a Corridor Study by the Nevada DOT.
Although Interstate 515 currently ends southeast of Henderson and northwest of Railroad Pass, it could be extended in two possible directions as a result of projects to upgrade both the U.S. 93 corridor to the southeast and the U.S. 95 corridor to the south.

I-238 is an exception because it is not a loop or spur of any one- or two-digit interstate (no I-38 exists anywhere near I-238).
