 Interstate 96 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Interstate 96 (abbreviated I-96) is an intrastate Interstate highway that is entirely within the U.S. state of Michigan.
The Wayne Co. portion of I-96 is still known to the locals as the Jeffries Freeway from its eastern terminus to the junction with I-275 and M-14.
The Interstate 96 routing was assigned along the Interstate 275 freeway south to the Jeffries Freeway, and eastward along the new freeway to the M-39 interchange, and the remaining stub of Interstate 96 around Farmington was redesignated as an extension of M-102 (now M-5).

The northern portion of Interstate 196 (in Kent, Ottawa, and Allegan counties) is known as the Gerald R. Ford Freeway.
By the early 1960s, I-96 followed the 1957 I-94 route, from Benton Harbor to Grand Rapids to Detroit.
The oldest segment (1965 or earlier) is between I-96 and US 24; the section between I-75 and I-94 opened in 1979; the final 9.1 mile section, between M-10 and I-75, opened on December 14, 1989.

Even prior to the creation of the Interstate highway system, the Michigan State Highway Department was planning a network of controlled-access freeways to cris-cross the state, connecting the larger population centers.
The Detroit-Lansing-Grand Rapids-Muskegon corridor was an obvious one, however the Interstate designation for this route went through a few changes before finally being designated as I-96 in 1957.
The entire length of the Brighton-Farmington Expressway was incorporated into the new Interstate and I-96 route markers likely made their first appearance on the highway in 1958 or 1959.
