Interval class   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
In music, specifically, musical set theory an interval class is an interval measured by the distance between its two pitch classes using integer notation.
Created to account for octave and inversional equivalency, an interval class is the shortest distance possible between two pitches inverted so they are the closest possible.
Since there are 12 pitch classes in the equal tempered scale the largest interval class is 6, since any interval larger than that comes closer to an octave of the other pitch.

Common Scales Exhibit Optimum Tonal Consonance   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
The frequency of occurrence of various interval classes in a given pitch-class set can be correlated with corresponding measures of perceived consonance for each interval class.
In this paper, it is shown that the pitch-class sets that provide the most consonant interval-class inventories are the major diatonic scale, the harmonic and melodic minor scales, and equally tempered equivalents of the Japanese Ritsu mode, the common pentatonic scale, and the common "blues" scale.
Consonant harmonic intervals are more readily available in these sets than in other possible sets that can be drawn from the 12 equally tempered pitch chromas.

Time intervals are specified in hh:mm:ss format (the seconds may be omitted, but the hours and minutes may not).
Interval arithmetic is handled in a couple of special ways, trying to cater for the most common cases.
The interval format 'syyyymmddHHMMSS' (sign, year, month, day, hour, minute, second) is the serialisation format returned by the serialise() method, and is accepted as an argument on instatiation.

This interval is based off an unsigned always increasing counter.
This means the interval is only accurate for about 12 hours which means that it is able to be useful for about a range of 6 hours (This is because internally everything is stored as 10's of usecs)
This can then be used to compute a time interval by subtracting two intervals from each other.

An Interval is a class that represents a length of time.
The interval will have a start time of the greater of the two interval start times, and an end value which is the lesser of the two end values.
This updates the invoking interval so it will have a start time of the greater of the two interval start times, and an end value which is the lesser of the two end values.

(Popova E.D.) Algebraic Solutions to a Class of Interval Equations   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Abstract: The arithmetic on the extended set of proper and improper intervals is an algebraic completion of the conventional interval arithmetic and thus facilitates the explicit solution of certain interval algebraic problems.
The conditionally distributive relations between extended intervals allow that complicated interval algebraic equations, multi-incident on the unknown variable, be reduced to simpler ones.
The algebraic solutions to a pseudo-linear interval equation in one variable are studied.
