Powell's Books - Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mount Everest Disaster by Jon Krakauer
By writing Into Thin Air, Krakauer may have hoped to exorcise some of his own demons and lay to rest some of the painful questions that still surround the event.
This updated trade paperback edition of Into Thin Air includes an extensive new postscript that sheds fascinating light on the acrimonious debate that flared between Krakauer and Everest guide Anatoli Boukreev in the wake of the tragedy.
But rather than continue the heated discourse that has raged since Into Thin Air's denouncement of guide Boukreev, Krakauer's tone is conciliatory; he points most of his criticism at G. Weston De Walt, who coauthored The Climb, Boukreev's version of events.

The resistors are fabricated on a thin, constant-thickness airfoil to minimize disturbance to the airflow being measured.
If there is flow, the air passing over the upstream legs of the bridge reduces the temperature of the upstream legs and that leads to reduced electrical resistance for those legs.
Separate sensors mounted on the airfoil measure the temperature of the airflow, which is used to complete the calculation for the mass of air passing by the sensor.

Since the air layer over the earth is thinner at the poles, any upward movement from the planet's surface passes through a greater portion of the air layer than the same movement would accomplish at the equator.
In the winter the air mass over the poles cools and contracts, and the thickness of the planet's local atmospheric layer decreases.

When "Thin Air" begins with the italicized description of a woman bound in the back of a van, abducted by someone who knows her and is videotaping everything, it is reminiscent of Robert B. Parker's "Crimson Joy," the first Spenser novel to get away from the first person narrative style of the series.
As far as her husband is concerned, Lisa St. Claire has disappeared into "Thin Air" (Parker has been much more mundane with his titles in his recent efforts and it has been years since he started off with any grandiose literary quotations).
Whereas the previous Spenser novel dealt with Chinatown, "Thin Air" focuses on the Hispanic elements in the greater Boston area, which forces Spenser to use the assistance of Chollo, the enforcer for the L.A. mobster we met in "Stardust" (Hawk is in Burma--the mind boggles).

A bank of clouds was assembling on the not-so-distant horizon, but journalist-mountaineer Jon Krakauer, standing on the summit of Mt. Everest, saw nothing that "suggested that a murderous storm was bearing down." He was wrong.
But for Krakauer himself, further interviews and investigations only lead him to the conclusion that his perceived failures were directly responsible for a fellow climber's death.

It is going to create industries that are actually hybrid creatures between the telecom's industry, which comes from a monopoly environment, the wireless industry and the Internet industry, which comes from a totally radical capitalism environment.
What the actual manifestation of that is going to look like, as far as what sort of approach they have to information dispensation, to customer ownership, and things like that, when the market matures, well that's pretty much up in the air right now.

The consequences for air quality would be direct yet uncontrollable as state after state would be able to opt out of known and certain compliance and attainment strategies and opt into new market-based regimes where everything would be negotiable but little would be verifiable.
As the number of states and sources evading their Clean Air Act responsibilities by way of this "don't ask don't tell" policy has grown, EPA has found itself in a frantic rush to "grandfather" the past noncompliance.

Overall, "Into Thin Air" fantastic storytelling make it one of the best non-fiction books published in the last decade or so.
Krakauer starts off with an interesting lead into the book, about how one of his team mates accidentally turns up the oxygen causing him to rapidly lose oxygen in his tank, and has to find a way back down to get another one.
Into Thin Air, a non-fiction, firsthand personal account of the Mt. Everest disaster of 1996, is, in a nutshell, a good firsthand account that seems to lack the concentration and focus by the author, Jon Krakauer, which is needed for this novel to be a good read.
