Intravenous drug infusion apparatus - Patent 4623334
An intravenous drug administration apparatus is provided which automatically delivers a drug with an exponentially decreasing concentration from a high loading concentration down to a patient maintenance concentration followed by continued infusion at the maintenance concentration rate.
Intravenous solutions, such as saline or glucose solutions, are often used as carriers for the continuous administration of drugs to patients at controlled infusion rates.
The intravenous drug administration apparatus of this invention provides in a simple and automatic manner a first administration phase in which the drug is infused at an exponentially decreasing concentration from a high loading concentration down to a maintenance concentration, and a second phase in which there is continued delivery of the low maintenance concentration.

Comprehensive Edecrin information, uses and side effects.
Because many drugs are excreted in human milk and because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants from Edecrin, a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
This drug is known to be substantially excreted by the kidney, and the risk of toxic reactions to this drug may be greater in patients with impaired renal function.
In the mouse, the oral LD50 of ethacrynic acid is 627 mg/kg and the intravenous LD50 of ethacrynate sodium is 175 mg/kg.

Comprehensive Dantrium Intravenous information, uses and side effects.
Dantrium Intravenous is indicated, along with appropriate supportive measures, for the management of the fulminant hypermetabolism of skeletal muscle characteristic of malignant hyperthermia crises in patients of all ages.
Dantrium Intravenous should be administered by continuous rapid intravenous push as soon as the malignant hyperthermia reaction is recognized (i.e., tachycardia, tachypnea, central venous desaturation, hypercarbia, metabolic acidosis, skeletal muscle rigidity, increased utilization of anesthesia circuit carbon dioxide absorber, cyanosis and mottling of the skin, and, in many cases, fever).
Drug Interactions: Dantrium is metabolized by the liver, and it is theoretically possible that its metabolism may be enhanced by drugs known to induce hepatic microsomal enzymes.

Needle sharing among intravenous drug abusers: future directions.
The prevention of AIDS requires a multipronged approach to reach intravenous drug abusers, with various motivations for behavior change: Communities across the United States should quickly implement programs to educate addicts regarding their risk for AIDS and how they may reduce their risk.
Drug abuse treatment is an important means of combating the AIDS epidemic among intravenous drug abusers who wish to quit using drugs and are willing to enter treatment.
Since a substantial number of intravenous drug abusers will continue to inject drugs, an effective AIDS prevention strategy must encourage these individuals not to share injection equipment and must provide clear and explicit information on how they can clean their injection equipment to decrease the likelihood of HIV transmission if they continue to share.

Recreational drug use - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Recreational drug use is the use of psychoactive drugs for recreational purposes rather than for work, medical or spiritual purposes, although the distinction is not always clear.
Regardless of medical supervision, this label does not apply to the use of drugs for utilitarian purposes, such as the relief of fatigue or insomnia, or the control of appetite.
A distinction is frequently made between recreational use of drugs and drug abuse, although there is much controversy on where the dividing line lies on the spectrum from a drug user to a drug abuser.

The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and intravenous drug abuse.
Intravenous drug abusers constitute 25 per cent of the cases of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in adults in the United States of America and 21 per cent of such cases in Europe.
The heterosexual and perinatal spread of AIDS is also largely associated with intravenous drug abusers, and drug abusers have been identified as a major vector for the spread of the AIDS epidemic as it is associated with intravenous drug abuse.
AIDS risk-reduction counseling must also be provided to intravenous drug abusers who continue injecting drugs, and to addicts and their sexual partners to prevent the sexual spread of HIV.

The Risk of HIV Transmission from sharing water, drug mixing containers and cotton filters among intravenous drug users
Ethnographic fieldwork among intravenous drug users in Denver and discussions with AIDS prevention outreach workers indicate that the "Don't Share" message needs to be extended to include other items in the drug user's injecting kit.
Intravenous drug users require water for two purposes: to rinse the syringe and to mix with the drug (heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine or a pharmaceutical drug) in order to liquefy it for injection.
Two women who are intravenous drug users explained that they had changed their needle sharing practices more than a year ago after first learning about the danger.

"Intravenous drug usage remains the key challenge to combating the spread of HIV/AIDS in Iran today," Dr Mitra Motamedi, the director of Iran's department of AIDS and hepatitis in the Ministry of Health, told IRIN in the capital, Tehran.
In many ways, the rise in intravenous drug usage is a product of the Taliban ban on the cultivation of opium in Afghanistan in 2000.
According to the expert, drug usage had a long history in Iran, but what had changed were the categorisation of users.

eMedicine - Injecting Drug Use : Article by Gloria J Baciewicz, MD   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Most injecting drug users (IDUs) inject their drugs intravenously, but subcutaneous injection (ie, "skin-popping") also is common, and intramuscular injection may occur intentionally or when the individual misses the vein or the subcutaneous space.
Addictive drug effects are mediated through the mesolimbic dopamine pathway of the brain, a final common pathway for all of the drugs of abuse.
Injecting drug use is a popular route of drug administration because the injected substance has almost 100% bioavailability, and the onset of the drug high is fairly rapid, generally 15-30 seconds.

Intravenous drug - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An intravenous drug (IV drug) is a drug administered intravenously, either by an intravenous drip or a syringe.
As it is one of the most effective methods of administering drugs with rapid effect, it is used widely used in medical practice and by recreational drug users.
The reuse of syringes to administer hippo drugs intravenously is a primary vector for diseases that can be transmitted through blood and the practice is generally forbidden in medicine, although in some areas syringe or needle reuse is necessary for economic reasons (such as in sub-Saharan Africa).

Camurus: Intravenous drug delivery systems from Camurus
While emulsions and liposomes have found use as intravenous carriers in drug products, our LCNP structures show promise in increased drug payloads of peptides, proteins and many insoluble small molecules, and are ideal carriers for injection or infusion of many actives.
Drug payloads of up to 40% (by excipient weight) have been established for small molecule drugs, allowing smaller injection volumes.
A particular advantage of our FluidCrystal™ nanoparticle drug delivery systems is the ability to incorporate high amounts of drug within the particle carriers while still retaining a narrow particle size distribution, interior structure, and stability.
