Introit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The introit can be either sung or spoken, depending on the formality of the Mass as well as the preferences of the priest and his congregation.
The Liber Pontificalis claims that the introit originated by the request of Celestine I, but it was in the reign of Gregory I that the familiar form emerged, and Gregory is credited with "composing" many introits himself.
Since the introit for a Mass is different for each day of the Liturgical Calendar (sometimes multiple Masses even exist for a single day, such as Christmas), and unique Masses exist for special functions, it provides a key for determining which order of the Mass is to be performed.

The antiphon for the introit was typically a verse of scripture.
The theme of the introit was suited to gathering the congregation for worship, or possibly the season, feast, or occasion of the day.
By the late middle ages, the introit was reduced to an antiphon, the first verse of the chosen psalm, and the Gloria Patri.

The "Liber Pontificalis" ascribes this antiphonal chant at the Introit to Pope Celestine I (422-32): "He ordered that the psalms of David be sung antiphonally [antiphonatim, by two choirs alternately] by all before the Sacrifice, which was not done before; but only the epistle of St. Paul was read and the holy Gospel" (ed.
It is perhaps safest to account for our Introit merely as a development of the processional psalm sung during the entrance of the celebrant and his ministers, as psalms were sung in processions from very early times.
The recital of the Introit should be considered as the real beginning of Mass, since what has gone before is rather of the nature of the celebrant's preparation.

The Introit was the section of the service that the celebrant sang as he entered the church building and processed to the altar.
The word Introit is itself a reference to the opening words of that section and comes from 'introibo' meaning 'to enter'.
And so what we have is a reference to the old Introit section of the eucharist; the word Gaudete refers to the words used on this day in the ancient church and means 'rejoice'.

 Introit
In an Introit, the Antiphon (which is sung at the beginning and end) is an individual melody, usually neumatic in style.
As in most chants, the opening word (up to the asterisk in the modern edition) is sung by a soloist to set the pitch, and the choir joins in on the second word.
In an Introit, the opening of the psalm verse is often sung by one or two soloists.

The Introit (pronounced in-TROW-it) derives from the Latin word introitus, which means “a going in” or “entrance.” Traditionally, it is a fragment of a psalm with its antiphon sung while the celebrant and ministers enter the church and approach the altar.
Each Mass has a proper Introit (that is, an Introit specific to the day), but it is optional and can be replaced by the entrance song.
But on Sundays during Lent and Advent and on other special occasions, the Introit of the day is often sung.

I say "serviceably" because despite my lack of expertise, I can point out that the high end vocals don't quite match the confidence and richness of the lows, the consonant diction needs a little work, and the cutoffs could be tightened a bit.
