Topic: Introjection

  Projection and Introjection
Introjection is not as primitive as incorporation, as it often involved drawing an object in, but not incorporating it into the body.
Introjective identification is the taking in of someone else's good objects.
Introjection is thus 'input' into the internal world from the outer world.

Introjection - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Introjection is a psychological process where the subject replicates in itself behaviors, attributes or other fragments of the surrounding world, especially of other subjects.
Introjection is also the name of a defence mechanism, which handles threats from the outside that can potentially cause anxiety by infolding them into the internal world of the subject, where they can be neutralized or alleviated.
More specifically introjection means incorporating attributes, attitudes or qualities of an absent person of high significance (for example, mother gone to work or relative gone to heaven) into oneself.

The first object to be introjected, and the one which forms the centre of the child's inner world, and its ego, is the mother's breast.
During good moments between the couple, introjection of the good breast strengthens the capacity of the infant's ego for integration, and the capacity to love and trust his internal objects is strengthened.
In introjective identification with the loved and admired mother, father and combined parents, and later in identification with other adults who come to stand for these original figures (such as admired teachers), the child's internal world is enriched by qualities which can be taken in, maintained and developed.

 CHAPTER 5 - AVENARIUS
It is the philosophical fall of man. Before the fall he was in a state of philosophical innocence; he took the world as simple, single, as the senses show it; he did not know of body and soul, of mind and matter, of good and evil.
Elsewhere he says: introjection means that my thinking puts itself at the place of fellow-man, hence my thinking combines with his brain, which can be done only in fantasy, not really.
What is true and important is the disclosure of the fact of introjection, the demonstration that in our assumption that the world of fellow-man is the same kind of thing as my own, I introduce a second world of fantasy of another character, entirely outside my experience.

 Introjection
Introjection occurs as a coping mechanism when we take on attributes of other people who seem better able to cope with the situation than we do.
We often use admired and respected others for the models from which to draw out introjected qualities.
When we introject aspects of another person, it is possible that we also bring in attributes that are less helpful as we take on their persona.

 Some myths about practice building
An introjection is a forced belief which has not been assimilated by a person, like a foreign body which cannot be fully digested; it weighs you down.
An innocuous and common introjection is speaking, taking on mannerisms or dressing like your idol.
Returning to the main point at hand, the most pervasive and pernicious introjection I have seen among therapists is the unexamined belief that their success is determined by the size of their practice.

Central to introjection is the space of the buccal orifice, for it is this silent spot of the body that assimilates prior to the subsequent use made of this silent space as the material matrix for systems of representation (Derrida, 1986).
What introjection allows for-the taking into the mouth in order to subsequently express-is in incorporation transformed into a forbidden speech, a certain non-speaking through which what is taken in is now done so on the level of fantasy in order to be preserved as an unnamable Thing.

Borrowing from post-Freudian theories of mourning, he posits (although later undermines) a difference between introjection, which is love for the other in me, and incorporation, which involves retaining the other as a pocket, or a foreign body within one's own body.
The preservation of a discrete and separate other person inside the self (psychologically speaking), as is the case in incorporation, is considered to be where mourning ceases to be a 'normal' response and instead becomes pathological.
Derrida considers this introjection to be an infidelity to the other.

 Coming to Terms With Shadow
According to Jung, the most common approach to coming to terms with shadow is projection – locating the shadow in a person or object external to the subject.
A conscious search for the sources or origin of the projection is undertaken, including both collective and personal determinants of the projection.
Thus, although not long term ways of coming to terms with shadow, both projection and introjection are superior to repression.
