East Asian Studies 210 Notes: Eskimo/Aleut
Aleuts are thought to be distant cousins of the Eskimo, and most linguists recognize an Eskimo-Aleut language family, whose proto-form is thought to have been spoken in northeastern Siberia over 10,000 years ago.
The Bering and Copper Island Aleuts are the descendants of a population moved there en masse by the Russians in the 19th century from more easterly islands in the Aleutian chain.
The Aleuts had considerable knowledge of human anatomy, since they mummified the corpses of important people by removing the viscera, washing the body in a cold stream, and stuffing it with oiled sphagnum moss for preservation.

It consists of the Eskimo languages, known as Inuit in the north of Alaska, Canada, and Greenland, as Yup'ik in the west of Alaska, and as Yuit in Siberia, on the one side, and the single Aleut language on the other.
In Alaska, Yup'ik or Inuit is preferred, depending on who is being referred to.
However, recent research suggests that Yup'ik by itself is not a valid node, or, equivalently, that the Inuit dialect continuum is but one of several languages of the Yup'ik group.

The Inuit tribes have a deeply-rooted Shamanistic culture, and had highly developed methods for initiating new shamans, such as various forms of isolation and self-denial, such as fasting, solitary confinement, celibacy, dietary and purity restrictions, and protracted prayer.
For example, a Caribou Inuit initiate named Igjugarjuk, in his long and arduous initiatory vision, was at one point reduced to a skeleton and then was 'forged' with a hammer and anvil.

The new owners then further eroded the Inuit way of life by bringing in several versions of Christianity, introducing mechanisation to the fishing an canning industries, finding gold with its bloody and heart-breaking consequences and eventually discovering one of the largest natural oil and gas reserves in the world.
On the positive side, the differences between some of the Inuit groups that had led to occasional bloody confrontation became a thing of the past and the collective conscience of the exploiting classes is at least starting to talk about land-claims and the rights of what are still an exploited minority.
