Inuvik, formerly Inuvvik (place of man), is a town in the Northwest Territories of Canada and is the administrative centre for the Inuvik Region.
Inuvik was conceived in 1953 as a replacement administrative centre for the hamlet of Aklavik on the west of the Mackenzie Delta, as the latter was prone to flooding and had no room for expansion.
Inuvik achieved village status in 1967 and became a full town in 1970 with an elected mayor and council.

Canada's first planned town north of the Arctic Circle, Inuvik was begun in 1954 as an administrative centre to replace Aklavik, a settlement to the west wrongly thought to be doomed to envelopment by the Mackenzie's swirling waters and shifting mud flats.
In summer a bus service operates from Dawson – its Inuvik office is at 181 Mackenzie Rd (tel 979-4100 or toll-free in northern BC and the Yukon 1-800/661-0721); the Dempster Hwy is open year-round except for brief periods during the November freeze and April thaw.

I was at Inuvik last June and the weather was great, much better than montana.
It was balmy and dusty in inuvik but other years it has been close to freezing.
If you camp in Inuvik stay at the campsite in town if you want action and have your stuff secured, otherwise the campsite outside of town is a bit more peacefull.

Between 26 June and 9 August 2004, a team of three students travelled up to Inuvik by truck, took a boat ride 50km to Reindeer Station on the East Channel of the Mackenzie River, and stayed in a little cabin in the most bug-infested place imagineable.
The test site for the ground campaign was 150m above the cabins (a 2km hike), a 1km square of relatively flat tundra into which one could sink to the knee.
Three visits of about a week each were conducted with rest periods (and showers) in Inuvik in between.
