The castle of Inveraray, the seat of the Duke of Argyll, head of the Clan Campbell, is situated on the north-west border of Loch Fyne amidst some of the finest highland scenery.
The old castle, built by Colin Campbell about 1415, was situated only 80 yards from the present castle but it was swept away, as was the nearby town, in the grand scheme of rebuilding carried out by Roger Morris and Robert Mylne in the middle of the 18th century for the 3rd and 5th Dukes.
The 'new' 18th Inveraray castle is definately an eye catcher, especially when crossing the bridge on the eastern road to Loch Lomond and beyond.
