Inverness (Inbhir Nis in Scottish Gaelic) is the only city in the Scottish Highlands.
The city is also home to the football clubs Inverness Caledonian Thistle F.C. and Clachnacuddin F.C. Bught Park, located in the centre of Inverness is the Finishing point of the annual Loch Ness marathon.
Inverness is linked to the Black Isle across the Moray Firth by the Kessock Bridge.

A later castle in Inverness was destroyed by Malcolm III in about 1070, who then built another on a hill overlooking the River Ness at the point where it was crossed by a ferry.
Progress came to a halt when Inverness was largely destroyed in an attack by Alexander, Lord of the Isles in 1429 to avenge his arrest in the town by James I the previous year (see our Historical Timeline).
The Caledonian Canal was cut to link Scotland's east and west coasts and among its many users were boats engaged in herring fishing: as the fish migrated, they were followed from coast to coast by vessels using the canal as a short cut.
