Chapter 1. Digestion in Teleost Fishes
An early elaboration of the gut is seen in lampreys where an infolding (typhlosole) of the gut wall presumably increases the absorptive area of the gut.
The gut forms very early during embryological development (ontogeny) and shows some of the same stages of development as in the evolution of the vertebrate gut, some larval fish having portions of their gut which are ciliated, for example.
The gut appears to shorten, for example, in fish in which the larval stage is herbivorous and the adult stage is carnivorous.

Gut peptide reduces caloric intake in obese individuals   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Sep 9, 2003 An infusion of a peptide from a naturally occurring gut hormone reduces caloric intake in obese individuals for at least 24 hours, according to double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study in the New England Journal of Medicine.
In addition, there was a strong, significant inverse correlation between fasting PYY level and body mass index.
A deficiency of PYY may play a role in the pathogenesis of obesity, and this peptide may therefore be useful for treating obesity, the researchers conclude.

Leaky Gut could be implicated as a primary contributor to asthma, food allergies, chronic sinusitis, eczema, urticaria, migraine, IBS, fungal disorders, fibromyalgia, and inflammatory joint disorders including rheumatoid arthritis.
As the body heals and pathogens are greatly reduced and stay where they belong in the body instead of getting back into the blood and lodging into tissue, other conditions such as hormone problems will be corrected as well, as demonstrated in many HS sufferers that have successfully followed the program leading to their healing.

Intestinal Microbes: When does normality change into a health and performance insult
Gut tissues represent approximately only 5% of body weight but account for 15 to 30% of whole body oxygen consumption and protein turnover because of the high rate of epithelial cell turnover and metabolism (Gaskins, 2001).
This immunogenic role of the gut microbiota is most clearly observed in the immaturity of the gut immune system in germfree animals, which have underdeveloped intestinal lymphoid tissues, substantially decreased numbers of lymphocytes (B and T-cells), and low antibody concentrations (Wostmann, 1996).
An understanding of the inter-relationship of gut physiology, microbiology, and immunology to gut health will become increasingly important to critically evaluate the impact of the normal gut microbiota on animal growth.

Aluminum phosphate is insoluble and therefore is not absorbed from the gut.
Thus, aluminum hydroxide lowers the level of soluble phosphate in the gut by the two above mentioned mechanisms and consequently, the absorption of phosphate from the gut is reduced.
Calcium is absorbed from the gut in a two step mechanism which involves 1,25 dihydroxy-cholecalciferol, and it has been proposed that the absorption of aluminum uses the same or two similar steps.

DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant): A Western lifestyle, characterized by a low level of physical activity, and an energy-dense diet rich in easily digestible (refined) carbohydrates and fats, is associated with an increased risk of developing colon cancer.
A limitation of these models is that they do not explain the inverse relation of risk with physical activity or the positive relation of risk with obesity.
A more recent theory states that effects of a Western lifestyle on colon cancer risk may at least in part be mediated by alterations in the metabolism of insulin and insulin-like growth factors (IGFs).

The success of spontaneous symmetry breaking in explaining electroweak physics led physicis to wonder whether the three particle theories of the SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1) model could be the spontaneously broken version of a higher unified theory at some higher energy scale, a single theory with only one gauge group and one coupling constant.
The single gauge group of a GUT has to be mathematically capable of containing the group product SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1) of the three gauge groups relevant to low energy particle physcs.
The spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism would presumably be scalar field potentials of the form shown above, where a subset of the scalar fields with normal modes like the radial mode become massive, and the remaining massless scalar fields become longitudinal modes of massive gauge bosons to break the gauge symmetry down to the next level.

As hind gut fermentors, guinea pigs digest much of their food in the cecum and colon (large intestine), which are at the end of the digestive tract. The cecum, a large, thin-walled sac located at the junction of the small and large intestine, contains up to 65% of gastrointestinal (GI) contents.
Gastrointestinal ileus (malfunction of the digestive tract due to gut slowdown) is commonly seen in guinea pigs on low-fiber diets.
Decreased appetite, a bloated or tense abdomen, along with lethargy and a decrease in the volume and size of feces passed are all signs of gastrointestinal ileus.

Inverse proliferation asymmetries in SI mice   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Results: Asymmetry of cell proliferation in inverse axial rotation is a mirror image of the pattern seen for normal axial rotation: right predominates over left.
Patterns of proliferation in constraining extraembryonic membranes, particularly visceral yolk sac, suggest that rotation could be pushed by uneven lateral growth as body and gut tubes form, for they are attached to these membranes.
Conclusions: Data from iv/iv mice provide additional evidence that differential growth, constrained by contiguous extraembryonic membranes, may drive closure of body and gut walls and contribute to axial rotation.

Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) are the framework wherein three of nature's forces---the strong, the weak, and the hypercharge forces (the latter being a better way of describing the electromagnetic force at energies above several hundred GeV---come together as facets of one underlying force.
This in turn would allow GUT physics to be observed directly in the next round of accelerator experiments.
The figure shows the inverse strengths of the three forces with and without the extra large dimensions.

Everyone has about 100 trillion bacteria in their gut; ideally, beneficial bacteria should make up about 85 percent of the intestinal tract, and harmful bacteria about 15 percent.
