Inversion (geometry) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Euclidean geometry, the inversion of a point X in respect to a point P is a point X* such that P is the midpoint of the line segment with endpoints X and X*.
Closely related to inverse in a point is reflection in respect to a plane, which can be thought of as a "inversion in a plane".
Inversion with respect to the origin corresponds to additive inversion of the position vector, and also to scalar multiplication by −1.

 III.C. CRYSTALS, SYMMETRY, AND DIFFRACTION
Inversion: A symmetry operation in which each point of an object is converted to an equivalent point by projecting through a common center (called center of inversion or center of symmetry) and extending an equal distance beyond this center.
The repeat distance between points in a particular row of the reciprocal lattice is inversely proportional to the interplanar spacing between the nets of the crystal lattice that are normal to this row of points.
Inversion symmetry (i): each point in the object is converted to an identical point by projecting through a common center and extending an equal distance beyond this center.

Optical device for copying machine with inversion of principal point of optical system - Patent 4792826
Accordingly, the principal point H (strictly the median point between a fore principal point h1 and a rear principal point h2) is located at a position outside of the optical lens 13.
However, in a case where the principal point is located externally of the optical system 11 as in the present invention, the copy ratio is determined not by the position of the optical system 11 but by the position of the principal point in the light path 4.
The inversion of the optical system 11 by the afore-mentioned drive mechanism 12 has to be effected in the unit copy ratio or smaller copy ratios and at a position where the lens barrel of the optical system 11 is free from interference with the mirror 8.

Inversions that occur along frontal systems support propagation along a line parallel to the weather front, and radio amateurs using frontal inversion often point their antennas parallel to the frontal system to take advantage of this form of propagation.

Inversion lines separate regions of opposing polarity and are often superposed by thin, dark filaments, which can be used as tracers.

 Xah: Special Plane Curves: Hyperbola
Hyperbola is commonly defined as the locus of points P such that the difference of the distances from P to two fixed points F1, F2 (called foci) are constant.
The inversion of a rectangular hyperbola with respect to its center is again a lemniscate of Bernoulli.
The inversion of any hyperbola with respect to a focus is a limacon of Pascal.

 Introduction
From the inversion point of view, velocity and heterogeneities are closely related.
What is needed to use this approximation is an inversion procedure that fits traveltimes with ellipses once a model for heterogeneities has been chosen.
This compromise addresses three issues: how general the medium can be, how stable the inversion procedure is, and how difficult the ray tracing is. Such an ``intermediate'' model consists of consists of homogeneous elliptically anisotropic blocks separated by straight interfaces of variable dip and intersect.

System for decreasing resistance to flow of crude oil up from a well or through a pipeline - Patent 4100967
until the inversion point is crossed where a lower viscosity emulsion consisting of oil-in-water is formed for reducing resistance to flow of crude oil up from deep in a well to the surface, or through a pipeline.
This is the inversion of phase region wherein the brine-in-oil emulsion changes from the internal phase to the external phase.
The inversion point of the water-in-oil emulsion may vary due to the particular oil viscosity, mechanism for making the emulsion, the water temperature, etc. In the disclosed invention, the inversion point occurred substantially at the 80 percent brine-to-oil ratio area on the curve.

The correlation of breakpoints in translocations and inversions on morphological and genetic maps permits the assignment of genes to specific chromosome bands.

Hyperthermogelling aqueous phase change inks and methods for using them in an ink jet printer - US Patent 5462591   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
An aqueous phase change ink contains a selected concentration of hyperthermogelling component that causes the ink to gel when its temperature is increased to its thermo-inversion point or when the concentration of the hyperthermogelling component is increased by evaporation, or substrate absorption, of water from the ink.
The ink may be jetted directly onto a heated and/or absorptive substrate or jetted onto a cooler and/or hydrophobic surface before being transferred to the substrate.
The thermo-inversion point is preferably about ambient temperature, and the preferred hyperthermogelling component is a nonionic surfactant, such as an ethylene oxide propylene oxide block copolymer surfactant.

CNN - Rare disorder offers genetic clues to internal clock - October 21, 1999
The disorder, which was discovered less than 10 years ago, is caused by a genetic abnormality on chromosome 17 and occurs in one out of 25,000 children, who are characterized by certain physical traits -- tantrums, hyperactivity, mental retardation and severe sleep disturbances, de Leersnyder said.
She added that the discovery of melatonin inversion may point to the reason for some of the aggressiveness and hyperactivity of these children who are severely sleep deprived.
Although she does not think it is possible that lack of sleep could cause retardation, the results may open the door to finding new treatments, such as methods for blocking melatonin production during the day and boosting it at night.
