Inverted Swan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
The Inverted Swan, a 4-pence blue postage stamp issued in 1855 by Western Australia, is the world's first invert error (technically a "frame invert").
While the 1d fl was engraved in England by Perkins Bacon, other values, including the 4d blue, were produced by Horace Samson in Perth using lithography, and with different frames around the swan design for each value.
In January 1855, additional 4d stamps were needed; but when Alfred Hillman brought the stone out of storage, he found that two of the impressions were damaged, and had to redo them.

Motor Boat and Yachting - Tips and Equipment - The tale of the broken swan neck
A 'swan neck' is an inverted 'U' in a pipe line, and it is generally designed to prevent the influx of unwanted fluid into a specified area.
The importance of swan necks was raised recently by reader Alan Waller who had suffered various problems when he bought a second-hand sea-going motor cruiser that had spent its early years on the Norfolk Broads.
The culprit was the breather hose, which had no swan neck; it was able to collect water while the boat was under way and dispense it into the tank under suction from the engine's fuel lift pump.

In the case of the swans in “Swan Lake,” however, humans are cygne-fied, which means that the curse of anxiety and guilt is undone- at least temporarily.
In the clouded history of “Swan Lake’s” literary source, it could be that the curse that changes a maiden to swan might have been reversed.
In “Swan Lake,” for example, the restlessness inherent in the inverted chords at the beginning of the Overture both drive the ballet and identify its tonal center.

 1869 Pictorial Inverts
On the other hand, the Inverts must have been an embarrassment to postal officials, who already faced public ridicule over the irregular 1869 designs, alleged gum problems and criticism of the contract terms from Butler, Carpenter.
That title goes to the famous Western Australia "Inverted Swan" which was printed in 1854 from a misentered cliche in the lithographic stone.
This opinion is supported by the Lichtenstein story of the 15c "quarter sheet" purchased at a New York City post office, and by the existence of the 24c block and two pairs.
