Black triangle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It originates from Nazi Germany, where it was one of a number of inverted triangle insignia used in concentration camps to designate different prisoner categories (see Nazi concentration camp badges).
As a symbol of lesbian pride it is considered the female counterpart to the pink triangle, which was a symbol for gay men.
Today an inverted triangle is often used as a lesbian or feminist symbol because the inversion represents fighting back against discrimination, as opposed to passive acceptance of "separate but equal" treatment.

 Pink triangle
The pink triangle (rosa Winkel) was a symbol used by the Nazis to identify male prisoners in concentration camps who were sent there because of their homosexuality.
Not all of the prisoners with a pink triangle identified themselves as gay (sometimes they were married, and had had sex with a man only a few times), and not everyone convicted under paragraph 175 were carried off to a concentration camp (in fact, most were only jailed).
The inverted pink triangle has become an international symbol of gay pride and the gay rights movement, and is second in popularity only to the rainbow flag.

Each prisoner in the concentration camps wore a colored inverted triangle to designate their reason for incarceration, and hence the designation also served to form a sort of social hierarchy among the prisoners.
A green triangle marked its wearer as a regular criminal; a red triangle denoted a political prisoner.
As the pink triangle is historically a male symbol, the fl triangle has similarly been reclaimed by lesbians and feminists as a symbol of pride and solidarity.

 Geometry of Binomial Coefficients (1984)
If, however, Pascal's triangle were extended to an infinite number of rows, then for all finite triangles this effect would disappear, and the original and magnified patterns would be identical.
The limiting pattern obtained from Pascal's triangle modulo two is thus ``self-similar'' or ``scale invariant,'' and may be considered to exhibit the same structure at all length scales.
Successive rows in the triangle are generalized to planes in the pyramid, with each plane carrying a square grid of integers.

In essence, the inverted triangle is just a way to remember that you should go from the general to the specific in your introduction.
The inverted triangle certainly isn't the only way to structure an introduction, but it is very helpful when an introduction doesn't spring instantly to mind.
