Style Analysis - Returns-based Style Analysis
Style analysis uses a quadratic minimization procedure that minimizes the difference in monthly return performance between the mutual fund's performance and a set of portfolio weights for the style indices under consideration.
Style analysis is the construction of this set of portfolio weights for the style indices such that the portfolio style or composition best mimics the actual portfolio composition of the mutual fund being investigated.
Returns-based style analysis suggests that a manager’s investment style, both past and present, may be determined by comparing the manager’s returns to the returns of a number of selected passive style indices.

IPEX Sevices: Performance Monitoring: Investment Style   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Investment style is important as it indicates whether or not the money manager is purchasing securities that are consistent with the money manager's stated and historical investment discipline, as well as with the particular account's investment parameters.
Return Based Analysis, on the other hand, is based upon the historical investment performance that the account's equity or fixed income securities have produced, i.e., whether they have generated a pattern of investment returns that is comparable to the return pattern of an index that has the same stated investment style.
Regardless of their consistency, both approaches are instrumental in raising issues for the client to consider as part of its evaluation and to discuss with its managers for further clarification.
