IWM Post: Notes on Books: Antohi - Institute for Human Sciences
On May 21, 1991, Ioan Petru Culianu, a Romanian-born Professor of Religion at the University of Chicago’s Divinity School, was shot in the back of his head, at close range, in the restroom next to his office.
One strong line of argument suggests that Culianu was made into a symbolic scapegoat and warning because he was vehemently and convincingly putting the finger on the continuity between Romania’s worst nightmares and their native architects/builders/successors, from the Iron Guard to the post-communist regime.
Forty authors from seven countries revisit Culianu’s lives and works: the precocious student and the struggling immigrant; the path-breaking scholar and the haunting fiction writer; the smiling mentor and the challenging colleague; the radical political journalist and the iconoclastic cultural critic; the spiritual pilgrim and the all-too-human being.

Ioan Petru Culianu was a unique figure in the history of religions because of his attempt at renewing the methodological steps of a discipline that was going through a period of crisis.
Culianu's research firmly outstrips the classical canons of this discipline, constituting a kind of frontier research, thus anticipating a new paradigm, where important things happen at the intersection of great researches, that is on the frontier.
Culianu reached such a conception because of a rapid transition from a toolbox approach-like methodology to one inspired by the theory of fractals and the cognitive sciences.

In the Renaissance, the apology of the Individual (Castiglione`s, Machiavelli`s The Prince), of the exceptional being, generated a profound belief in magic and in the phantasms of the mind (the cases of M. Ficino and G. Bruno analysed by Culianu in Eros ºi magie în Renaºtere/Eros and Magic in the Renaissance -12).
When speaking about image, Culianu referred to the process of imagining in the Renaissance and defined everyone`s perceptions deriving from a flow of phantasms, which is the common language of the souls.

Eliade and Culianu are major figures in Romanian culture and philosophy internationally recognised.
By considering Eliade, we can pay full attention to the idea that both Collingwood's theory of presuppositions and his re-enactment theory can be applied not only to our thinking but also to the thinking of the archaic people.
Culianu's method concerning the analysis of the phenomenon of gnosis is very similar to Collingwood's theorising.
