  Ioannis Alevras - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ioannis Alevras (1912-1995) was a socialist politician who served as Chairman of the Greek Parliament.
He had defended Andreas Papandreou during his trial in the Aspida affair and had been in jail during the years of the military dictatorship for resisting it.
After PresidentConstantine Karamanlis resigned, Alevras served as an interim deputy President (March 10, 1985 - March 30, 1985) of the Republic until new President Christos Sartzetakis was elected from the Parliament.

Mitsotakis, prime minister from 1990 to 1993, should stand trial before a special supreme court on charges of morally instigating a scheme to tap the phones of his political rivals between 1988 and 1991, using information obtained by unlawful means, breach of faith and concealment of a crime.
Former parliament president Yiannis Alevras said that the proposal was a blow to the government's authority and consistency, and a major setback for Parliament.
Finally, he announced the organisation of an international conference on Greek studies and language, and support to the conference, to be held in Thessaloniki, on the least widely spoken languages in the European Union.

Alevras, born in Messini in 1912, was rushed to hospital on Monday suffering from bronchial pneumonia.
Alevras became involved in politics and the trade union movement at an early age and was imprisoned in 1935 for his democratic beliefs.
Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou said Alevras' "death is a great loss." "His experience, fighting spirit and prudence in our joint course since 1960 has been valuable to us all," the prime minister said in a note of condolences.
