Show Business Weekly: Review: Iolanthe   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Iolanthe, written by composer Sir Arthur Sullivan and lyricist and book-writer W.S. Gilbert in 1882, is not as well remembered today as other Gilbert and Sullivan operas such as HMS Pinafore, Mikado and Pirates of Penzance.
Phyllis, a fairy, was banished from fairyland by the Queen Fairy for committing the deadly sin of marrying a mortal.
Iolanthe is recommended for any fan of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operas, but a theatergoer who is unfamiliar with these shows might consider beginning his foray into early English musical comedy with a more well-known and well-liked operetta such as HMS Pinafore or Pirates of Penzance.

Phyllis does not know that Strephon is half fairy (his upper half — his legs are mortal!) and when she sees Strephon kissing a seemingly young woman, she assumes the worst.

Though on the surface Iolanthe appears to be merely about a band of misguided fairies, it is the fantasy aspect that takes the production to a higher level of truth about the interactions of the characters.
Because Iolanthe is a fantasy and a satire, it is very interesting to watch the quirks and qualms and sheer absurdity of the characters unfold.
Cemocan Yesil plays his Strephon as the conflicted half-fairy, half-mortal with a due amount of angst at being manipulated by so many external forces (he is not allowed to marry Phyllis because of the House of Lords, but then he is placed at the center of the body by the fairies).
