Ion storm formulas are probably among the least known in the Planets community.
Ion storms are circular subspace disturbances that move rather randomly through the Cluster and affect ships.
This happens at a chance of 3.33% per turn: pancaking storms have their radius doubled, and their new voltage is the square root of the original voltage.

News - Eidos closes Ion Storm Austin // None /// Eurogamer
Eidos Interactive has announced that it is shutting down Ion Storm Austin, developer of seminal PC first-person shooter/role-playing game hybrid Deus Ex, at the cost of some 35 jobs.
The closure of Ion Storm Austin finally brings the Ion Storm name to an end after nearly 10 chequered years of history which produced a number of forgettable titles, at least one very good one and a few that polarised opinion.
Ion Storm Austin subsequently released Deus Ex: Invisible War last year, which polarised opinion among the Deus Ex faithful, and the well-received Thief: Deadly Shadows - both titles appearing on PC and Xbox.

Ion Storm is by far the most popular software company to have never released a single software title.

Ion Storm was founded shortly after Romero's departure from id. There appears to still be some bad blood between Ion Storm and the members of id, but most of it is vented through good-natured jokes.

Donovan's VGA Planets Helppages - Ion storms
Ion storms will cause enemy minefields to be cloaked from ships' sensors.
Note that Ion storms decloak ships after the ion storms have moved - it is quite possible that a storm moves over a starship that was just outside the storm at the beginning of the turn, and decloaks it.
It is also possible for a ship to be just inside an ion storm at the beginning of a turn and not be decloaked, because the storm moves away from it.

Solar wind - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Many phenomena are directly related to the solar wind, including: geomagnetic storms that can knock out power grids on Earth, auroras, why the tail of a comet always points away from the Sun, and the formation of distant stars.
While early models of the solar wind used primarily thermal energy to accelerate the material, by the 1960s it was clear that thermal acceleration alone cannot account for the high speed solar wind.
In the heliosphere, the composition of the solar wind is identical to the Sun's corona: By mass, 73% ionized hydrogen and 25% doubly ionized helium with the remainder as trace impurities.

The litigation also has included four subpoenas to the Observer, with which ION unsuccessfully attempted to force the paper to reveal the names anonymous sources and of whoever leaked Porter's e-mails to the Observer and the anonymous sources for the April 29 story.

On July 17, Dallas-based video game company Ion Storm, founded in 1996 by legendary designers John Romero and Tom Hall, closed the doors to its controversial 54th floor perch.
Eidos Interactive, the company that funded and now owned Ion, announced it would keep the Austin office open under the charge of Warren Spector, whose stellar game, Deus Ex, was the feather in Ion's cap, one of the biggest hits of 2000.
The assault on Ion was somewhat understandable given its unfulfilled promise, yet unreasonable because it was still a noble experiment.

ION Storm Dallas Closing Down - Shacknews
ION Storm Austin will continue to develop Thief 3, Deus Ex 2 and whatever other products they have going there.
According to one of the emails, Eidos financials are a big part of the decision to shut down ION Dallas (see this story for the great first quarter results) and shove out Anachronox since Eidos isn't sure of a hit like with Deus Ex 2 or Thief 3.
But the good news is Anachronox is apparently running great with the team having worked day and night for the past 2 weeks to make it perfect (though of course not as perfect if they hadn't been for the finish-or-die deadline), so it won't be some shovelware product, which would've been an incredible shame.
