 | | It is interesting to note that whilst we are doing this, a couple of months ago the people of the island of Tuvalu approached the Australian Government and asked if it would take their population, or part thereof, because their island was going under the ocean. |
 | | It seems bizarre to me that, when Tuvalu’s Prime Minister, Ionatana Ionatana, told the New Zealand Prime Minister, Helen Clarke, at a meeting in February that many of Tuvalu’s 10 500 residents would need relocation within two to three years, our Prime Minister would not even consider taking any of the Tuvalu people as refugees. |
 | | In the meantime, New Zealand has already taken 5 000 refugees from that island and anticipates taking the remainder. |
