The Ionia City Landfill site, on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. National Priorities List, was owned and operated by the City of Ionia as a landfill from the mid-1950s to the late 1960s, and accepted both industrial and municipal waste.

At MDPH's request, the Ionia County Health Department (ICHD) surveyed residents of the site area to determine whether they had noticed unusual odors in their basements that might be related to soil gas migrating from the site.
