The most southerly of the Ionian towns was Miletus, next came Myus and Priene, all three in Caria and all three speaking the same dialect.
The Ionian alphabet was the most important of the eastern branches of the old Greek alphabet and the form employed in the city of Miletus was adopted as the official alphabet in Athens in 403 B.C. In the middle of the 4th century B.C. this became the twenty-four letter Greek alphabet of the classical period.

 The Ionian Mission: The Cover
Included in the details along the side of the vessel are the bowsprit and spritsail yard, the boomkin pointing somewhat downward, the cathead, a bower anchor attached to a cable (cable-laid), the sheet anchor, gunports showing the lines that will open the lids, and far aft a cutter swinging from the davits.
Above the tacks is another slack line leading forward and attached to the side edge of the sail by a bridle arrangement.
Just as the tack is used to pull the lower corner of the sail forward when sailing close hauled, this 'bowline' is used to pull the windward side of the sail forward, to keep it from flapping or 'luffing'.

What are the Seven Modes of Music?
In the Ionian mode, the intervals are divided into a very familiar pattern of whole and half steps.
Guitarists use modal music to create interesting solo lines which can be played against melodies in other modes.
It exists because all seven notes of the Ionian scale could form modes in a mathematical sense, but the relationship between intervals in the Locrian mode is simply not that interesting musically.

To find an old fishing ground or the way through a shoal, one could line up landmarks, such as a near rock against a distant point on land; doing that in two directions at once gave a more or less precise geometric location on the surface of the sea.
At any one time in the year at any one point on the globe, the sun and stars are found above the horizon at certain fixed "heights" -- a distance that mariners can measure with as simple an instrument as one's fingers, laid horizontally atop one another and held at arm's length.
Charts have aided mariners ever since the Alexandrian astronomer Ptolemy created the first world atlas in the second century A.D. The redoubtable Ptolemy even plotted latitude and longitude lines on his atlas's 27 maps, though the farther one got from the known world centered on the Mediterranean, the dangerously less reliable they became.

 Composer Kurt Mortensen: Glarean's Dodecachordon
In the Dodecachordon Glarean explained that there were actually two more authentic modes (aeolian and ionian) and two more plagals (hypoaeolian and hypoionian), which center around the notes A and C respectively (our modern day minor and major scales).
However, by changing the B to a B-flat, the scale is really changed to the aeolian mode.
Each melodic line is based around a different mode, which is set to text about that mode, and ends on its corresponding final pitch.

By the end of the 3rd century BC, the Ionian Islands were Roman, and they successively became part of the Eastern Roman Empire and eventually that of the Byzantine.
