 Adriatic Sea
It is separated in the south from the Ionian Sea by the Strait of Otranto[?].
The Adriatic extends northwest from 40° to 45° 45' N., with an extreme length of about 480 miles (770 kilometers), and a mean breadth of about 100 miles (160 kilometers), but the Strait of Otranto[?], through which it connects at the south with the Ionian Sea, is only 45 miles wide.
Moreover, the chain of islands which fringes the northern part of the eastern shore reduces the extreme breadth of open sea in this part to 90 miles.

Although the ionian surface generally has a temperature of -140° C, hot spots with temperatures up to 1600° C (2900° F) attest to volcanically active areas.
Most of the ionian volcanoes do not appear to be high stratocones such as are displayed as the majestic volcanic peaks observed in the Ring of Fire on Earth.
It is surrounded by a vapor cloud made up of hydrogen, sodium, potassium, and ionized sulfur (derived by sputtering off the ionian surface) which has been stretched out to form a torus around its parent planet.

 ANACALYPSIS
On the derivation of the word Ionian, Dr. Lemprere says, "It is generally thought to come from the Hebrew Iavan, or (if pronounced with the quiescent vau) Ion; and in like manner the Hellenes are thought to be the same with Elisa, in the sacred writings, more especially their country Hellas.
The name of the chief Grecian city of the Ionians, Athena, was the name of the female generative principle, as was also Helena, called by Lycophron the Dove, which is a translation of the word Pleias, and also of the word Semiranis,* and Ion or Ione.
The Ionian Athenians claimed to be called Athenians from Athena, which was the name of Minerva, who was both the female generative principle and divine wisdom.

From this vent, lava is transported 10 kilometers (6 miles) in lava tubes to the Pacific Ocean where large steam plumes are generated by the interaction between the hot lava and the ocean.
Galileo scientists believe the plume seen on the western end of Prometheus is similar to this Hawaiian steam plume, except the Ionian plume is composed largely of sulfur dioxide and rises much higher because of Io's low atmospheric density and gravity.

Geomorphically, the Ionian landscape appears to consist almost entirely of volcanic craters (patera), flows, or other volcanic deposits.
Much of the Ionian surface consists of plains with relatively low relief (Figures P-13.2 and P-13.3), clearly some type of volcanic deposits probably mantled with sulfur or sulfur dioxide.
The angular mountains, such as Haemus Mons (Figure P-13.4), have relief of several kilometers and appear to be massifs or volcanic constructs of some sort.

He assumes the existence of a Mykenai-Homeric system of weights used to weigh copper; these copper weights “with the great migrations of the Aiolians and Ionians “ went from Kyme in Euboia to Kyme in Asia, whence they spread and became the basis of the Lydian-Ionian coinage.
The proof of this construction would be that for the Greeks the island of Euboia “was the nearest and most familiar source of copper” and that “the metals which they used was extracted mainly from the rich mines of the island of Euboia”.
Because of the concern with the mines of the island of Euboia, no attention has been paid to the more promising area of the Heraion, even thought slag deposits were reported near Mykenai.

 Galileo Project: Press Release
Now that Galileo's observations of Io have ended, scientists are focusing on trying to understand the big picture of how Io works by examining details.
Thirteen previously unknown active volcanoes dot infrared images from Galileo's final successful flyby of Io, volcanologist Dr. Rosaly Lopes of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory reported today at the spring meeting of the American Geophysical Union in Washington, D.C. That brings the total number of known Ionian hot spots to 120.
She showed a new image revealing that material slumping off a mountain named Tohil Mons has not piled up in a crater below, suggesting that the crater floor has been molten more recently than any landslides have occurred.
