 Sophocles biography
The great poet as general was the theme of many anecdotes, some of which have been preserved by the writer of memoirs, Ion of Chios, who met him in Chian society.
His old age is said to have been clouded by the attempt of his son Iophon to deprive him of the management of his estate on the ground of mental incapacity.
There the relations between father and son are so friendly that Dionysus is unwilling to bring back Sophocles to the upper world until he has had an opportunity to test Iophon's poetic powers when unaided by his father.

He proposed three hypotheses to account for the Iophon pattersoni complex but favored the proposal of Ridley and Dendy the least.
Topsent criticized the choice of Halichondria pattersoni as the type for the complex since Bowerbanks description did not mention the presence of bipocilli the most characteristic feature of Iophon.

Iophon's mother was named Nikostrate, and he too went on to become a tragic playwright like his father.
He produced, we are told, fifty plays, and Aristophanes specifically singles him out for cautious praise in the Frogs.
Frogs 71-79, Dionysus declares that Iophon is the only decent playwright left alive, but declines to bring Sophocles back to life at least until he can see how well Iophon does now that his father is no longer alive to help him.

[1999: November] Iophon (tan to Alzheimer's thread)
Reply: David Lupher: "Re: Iophon (tan to Alzheimer's thread)"
It would give us an interesting biographical counterpoint to the Philoctetes if it were true, akin to the relationships between Cymbeline and Imogen or Prospero and Miranda and what we know about Shakespeare's two daughters (of course I'm assuming that such a bad relationship would have been going downhill for years).
If it were true, indeed, I'd guess that the Iophon reference might be a specific substituted for a more general reference to "Sophocles' son."
