		Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad (DMandE) (AAR reporting mark DME) is a Class II railroad operating across South Dakota and southern Minnesota in the northern plains of the United States.
		The railroad was expanded in 1995 when it acquired additional former CNW branch lines from Rapid City, South Dakota, to Colony, Wyoming, and Crawford, Nebraska.
		Schieffer was no newcomer to the railroad, however, as he had first become involved with DMandE in 1983 when he worked to prevent the abandonment of the former CNW lines that eventually formed the first sections of DMandE's mainline.

		The Plymouth County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to contribute $1,000 to Washington County's suit against the railroad which claims the railroad is not meeting Iowa regulation in keeping overpass and underpass road crossings "in good repair."
		The railroad refused to replace four deteriorating crossings in Washington County -- a total cost of more than $6 million -- so that county filed an application calling for a Department of Inspections and Appeals judge to decide how much the railroad should pay for the replacements.
		A letter from ISAC President Denise Dolan noted that 90 of Iowa's 99 counties are in a similar boat as far as deteriorating railroad crossings and structures, so it would be in each county's interests to lend their support in this suit.

	Deal to build bridge component plant for PRB project a ‘calculated risk,’ DM&E says
		The Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad Corp. (DM&E) still is awaiting word from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) on a $2.3 billion federal loan that would help finance the railroad’s proposed Powder River Basin project.
		But that isn’t stopping the railroad from taking a “calculated risk” by entering into an agreement with Corselab Structures Inc. to build a manufacturing plant in Rapid City, S.D., that would supply pre-stressed and precast concrete bridge components for the project, the DM&E said.
		The railroad will need more than 750 bridge girders for the project, which calls for building a 262.3-mile line through western South Dakota and eastern Wyoming, and upgrading 600 track miles in South Dakota and Minnesota.

	Cleanup after train derailment in Iowa continues [Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers]
		DES MOINES, Iowa -- A train derailment Sunday afternoon about 18 miles south of Decorah along U.S. Highway 52, spilled approximately 98,000 bushels of corn, according to officials with the Iowa, Chicago and Eastern Railroad.
		Lynn Anderson, the railroads senior vice president for marketing, said they were working to get the grain salvaged and the cars back on the track Monday.
		Anderson said it is a busy time of year for the railroad because of harvest and the movement of grain.
