The Clarinda Correctional Facility was established in 1980 as an adult male medium-security prison to serve primarily chemically dependent, mentally retarded and socially inadequate offenders.
ICIW houses inmates in its dorm-like living units and celled housing.
The Correctional Release Center currently houses inmates in a variety of low-secure living areas and is charged with preparing inmates of Iowa’s correctional institutions for parole or discharge.

The Iowa Correctional Institution for Women has a"special needs" unit for such inmates, who can be extremely violent, sometimes smearing blood and feces in their confinement areas, said Deputy Corrections Director Jeanette Bucklew.
Hunter had been superintendent of the Iowa Women's Reformatory at Rockwell City in 1982 when it was converted to a state prison for men.
She left Iowa in 1984 to accept a post with the National Institute of Corrections in Washington, D.C. Hunter died March 14.

Former department of corrections employees of this or other federal, state, or local jurisdiction or volunteers who have left employment voluntarily or been terminated as a result of accusation or investigation for misconduct within the last six months shall not be allowed to visit at the facility where they were employed or volunteered.
Inmates/offenders under correctional supervision or detention will not be allowed to correspond with other inmates/offenders unless the individuals are immediate family and approved by the authority of the institution or both authorities in the case of correspondence between facilities.
Institutional procedures shall be established for the inmate to reserve time in a designated controlled area and obtain the material for reading during specified times.

With their criminal records, they have difficulty finding traditional employment and are often forced to take positions with low salaries, no benefits and no opportunity to escape the cycle of poverty that often led to their original crimes.
With few economic opportunities and little hope, many of these women re-offend and return to prison, creating even greater barriers for themselves and further damaging their families, children, and communities.

"It's pretty systematic that in the institutions in Iowa, they are short-staffed and full to the brim," he said.

DES MOINES--The Iowa Civil Liberties Union today filed a lawsuit on behalf of a schizophrenic prisoner who was punished for misbehavior that occurred after prison officials withheld medications that would have controlled her illness.
By September 2000, Pyburn was well enough to return to the disciplinary detention unit at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women in Mitchellville to complete sanctions that had been imposed on her when she had been actively mentally ill.
The defendants in the case are: Joshua Nnanji, M.D., psychologist Pat Millen, IWCI staff supervisor Paul Rode, ICIW Warden Diann Wilder-Tomlinson, and the Iowa Department of Corrections.

Iowa will also add 117 beds at the Fort Des Moines Work Release Facility, which will replace an existing 40-bed facility and create additional space for violent offenders.
Iowa is also considering adding a special needs facility to the state penitentiary in Fort Madison and adding additional bed space to the Iowa Medical and Classification Center at Oakdale to move all mentally and medically challenged inmates to one facility, freeing bed space for additional violent offenders.

Nelson, 59, of Iowa City, has been locked up at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women in Mitchellville since March 2003 when she was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the stabbing death of her husband, Dr. Richard Nelson, in his Cedar Rapids apartment.
A prominent pediatrician and dean of the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, Richard Nelson died of a single stab wound to the heart on the morning of Dec. 12, 2001.
None of Nelson's family remains in Iowa which is why she is being paroled to Illinois.

Certified mentoring programs in Iowa are required to meet standards of effective practice, and I expect the same of this program.
