Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), consisting of 13 private, faith-based colleges and universities in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota.
The new conference name (GPAC) was selected from among dozens of entries from students in a contest conducted in the fall of 1999.
Five students submitted the winning conference name and two of them - Miles Ruch of Doane and Northwestern's Brian Pike - were selected at random to receive $250 scholarships from the GPAC in recognition of their winning entries.

Eligibility for students participating in intercollegiate athletics is determined by regulations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, as well as by the academic regulations of Cornell College.
Students who have been ruled ineligible to participate in intercollegiate athletics may appeal such a ruling to the Academic Standing Committee.

The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Wartburg College has won both the Elmer Hertel All-Sports Traveling Trophy, presented to the Conference institution accumulating the most points in men’s sports and the All-Sports Traveling Trophy, presented to the Conference institution accumulating the most points in women’s sports.
Points are accumulated based on the school’s finish in each of the Conference’s 17 sports with 10 points awarded for a first place finish, nine points for a second place finish, etc.
The last time an Iowa Conference school won both All-Sports Trophies was in 1996-97 when Loras College won the Elmer Hertel Trophy and tied Luther College for the Women’s All-Sport Traveling Trophy.
