Ipala is a tiny village hooked in behind the only sheltered point for 60 miles after Cabo Corrientes, its an ideal place to wait out North winds if you are heading North.
Within 2 hours of sitting in Ipala we were visited by 3 of the locals, we heard splashing and looked over to see 2 boys and a girl who were taking advantage of their last day of holiday before school started again.
Its 53 miles SE of Ipala and no were to hide if the weather got really bad, fortunately the winds at this time of the year are pretty much all from the North, so at least its downwind.

Ipala is such a small and marginal anchorage that I was hoping there wouldn’t be many boats already seeking refuge there, in which case we probably wouldn’t be able to find a sheltered spot to anchor.
Roca Heddy lies at 20°14.23‚N by 105°34.31‚W. At the head of Ipala Cove is a small reef, and to the west of the tiny village is a short rock jetty with pangas anchored off it.
Outside Ipala, the sea was still flat because the wind was still northeast, and we were in the lee of Cabo Corrientes.

 ON THE WAY TO Z-TOWN
We had a nice sail from just west of Corrientes all the way to Ipala but it was into a head wind which is not supposed to happen this time of the year.
Later in the afternoon the wind moved around to the SW so we could reach all the way into the anchorage but that also meant the wind was blowing directly into the anchorage.
Ipala is noted for having a rocky bottom that is not easy to anchor in.

 January 16-28 2003 - A Week, No Make That Two, in Chamela
Once on the other side and 15 miles from our anchorage at Ipala, the wind suddenly died completely and we were left bobbing around in a glassy calm.
We caught three small skipjack tunas on the trip down to Ipala, but they were all too small to provide much eating so we threw them back to the sea.
There were five or six boats anchored in Ipala and we'd all left around the same time for Chamela, so there was a sort of regatta south to Chamela.

The Ipala anchorage is small and difficult to spot from sea.
Ipala is an interesting place only accessible by water or a bumpy dirt road eight hours away from the closest town to the north.
We were happy to share the anchorage with a Mexican navy ship who does their best to keep this section of coast under control.

There are actually four restaurants here as the 20 mile dirt road that connects to the main highway brings in tourists from Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara each weekend, and sometimes even during the week, that travel in dune buggies and four-wheel-drive vehicles.

As soon as I rounded Cabo Corrientes, the wind shifted out of the south and I had a great beat to Punta Ipala.
I arrived around 2 pm yesterday, set the hook in the small anchorage, and went to sleep.

The Sierra de Las Minas is an area of about 20,000 hectares with 6 park rangers to prevent forest fires, protection of wildlife, creation and maintenance of trails, and support of biological investigation.
The Volcan Ipala has 10 park rangers for an area of 2,000 hectares-with the same goals.
For the volcano that's enough, for the Sierra de Las Minas the most important watershed in Guatemala it's not even close to sufficient.

We had representatives like our local evangelical priest, the owners of the land, representatives from the Municipalidad of Ipala and Agua Blanca, and the most important, the campesinos.
We demonstrated most of the projects activities with pictures because many of the farmers don’t read.
The only bad thing about the Ipala reconnect is that it overlapped Ipala´s Feria.
