A recent development in the political life of Northern Basque Country was the emergence of several armed groups, especially, Iparretarrak (Those from the north).
Iparretarrak who campaigns for full Basque autonomy emerged during a labor dispute in Behe-Nafarroa in December 1973.
Iparretarrak's targets have been for the most part public and private property, security forces and its informants.
