The crowning glory of the Ipatiev Monastery ensemble is the five-dome Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.
The Epiphany Monastery (founded in the first quarter of the XV century), residence of the present Archbishop of Kostroma, is in the center of the city and accommodates a seminary, workshops for making church clothes, icons, as well as a printing house for publishing a newspaper.
Exhibitions housed in the Ipatiev monastery include the "Sacristy of the Trinity Cathedral" (donations of boyar and tsar families), "History of the Kostroma Region from Ancient Times to the End of the XIX Century", "Church Antiquities of the XIV-XIX centuries", "The Boyars Romanos` Chambers", "Natural History of the Kostroma Region".

 Our history
The monastery's elaborate complex of buildings includes structures dating from the end of the 16th to the end of the 19th centuries.
From early in the 17th century the monastery began to be patronized by the new Tzarist family – the Romanovs.
The monastery's sacristy housed many treasures and its library had many unique manuscripts and first-edition books, among them the famous chronicle: "Tale of the Temporal Years", a copy of one of the most ancient codes of the 9th through to the 12th century Kiev Russia.

Bolshevik authorities killed the last Romanov monarch, Nikolai II, and his immediate family in the cellar of the Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg, Russia on July 17, 1918.
Ironically, the Ipatiev House has the same name as the Ipatiev Monastery in Kostroma, where Mikhail Romanov had been offered the Russian crown in 1613.
