Ipsedixitism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ipsedixitism is the pejorative term for an unsupported rhetorical assertion; it is a term in logic for a missing argument.
An ipsedixitism is not explicitly defined as an axiom, and certainly not as a premise, but often appears as such in a syllogism like: "The economy needs more scientists, so expansion of science education will boost the future economy".
The ipsedixitism is a self-referential appeal to authority.

In rhetoric, an unsupported assertion is an ipsedixitism.
An ipsedixitism can not be explicitly defined as an axiom, though it is often treated as the first step in a logic chain.
Ipsedixitisms are introduced as though supporting argument is unnecessary, and as such invoke an implcit appeal to the authority of the author.

Jeremy Bentham adapted the Latin "Ipse dixit" ("Himself said [1]") into the word ipsedixitism, which he coined to apply to all non-utilitarian political arguments.
"the only standard that is ascertainable is one of ipsedixitism: 1) value is whatever the State Board’s regulations declare it to be, and 2) the State Board’s regulations can be modified and interpreted in any manner that the State Board wishes." ([4])

After spending years in higher academic circles as a grad students, I should tell you: just because somebody holds a degree from an elite school doesn't mean that his expert opinion is better than another expert's.
Ipsedixitism is bad enough, but combined with a blind faith in elite schools, and it's positively pernicious.
TThese days I think we’ve become more or less a culture that is happy to “leave the thinking to the experts” — or at least to give too much credence to the opinions and dicta of “experts.” Ipsedixitism is a lazy way out of thinking for oneself.

For it was Ockam and his followers who, by neglecting the serious study of the great masters of the school, contributed to bring about that profound ignorance of the real doctrines of Scholasticism which, at the opening of the new era, rendered impossible the alliance of the schoolmen with the advocates of the new science.
Averroists wrought, irreparable injury to Scholasticism both directly and indirectly: directly, by their doctrines of determinism and of the unity of the active intellect, as well as by their principle that what is true in theology may be false in philosophy; indirectly, by their peculiar method, which was known as ipsedixitism.
Before we turn to the study of the modern era it is necessary to give here a general idea of the character of Scholastic philosophy.

The ipsedixitism is unstated dogma, or believed to be a matter of fact, e.g:
The Latin phrase is still commonly used as a synonym since the usage remains a literal translation; Mr A says that something is true because he says it is, and B tells C that this isn't good enough because only Mr A's own words back him up.
The Indiana Supreme Court held that it violated the Indiana Constitution, because: "the only standard that is ascertainable is one of ipsedixitism: 1) value is whatever the State Board’s regulations declare it to be, and 2) the State Board’s regulations can be modified and interpreted in any manner that the State Board wishes." The lack of evidence supporting this noxious ipsedixitism speaks for itself.
The architects of this strategy knew perfectly well that they were exploiting, among other unsavory qualities, a long American habit of virulent racism, but they did it anyway, and we see the outcome now--Cheney is the capitalist arm and Bush is the religious arm.

She has made a deity, or rather a fetish, of President Bush, ignoring all more obviously culpable parties, in order to be able to focus her angst over the Louisianan catastrophe onto some tangible, if unclutchable, thing.

Chomsky had not a shred of evidence for this blood libel did not kept him from making it.
After all, he had something far better than evidence -- he had his own opinion; or what Jeremy Bentham called ipsedixitism: something is true because I myself have said it is true.
Yet Noam Chomsky was by no means alone in standing up in the days immediately following 9/11 and declaring that 9/11 was the expected and natural reaction of those who had been oppressed by American hegemony, and who, however immaturely, were fighting back in retaliation for what we had done to them.
