Ipswich was proclaimed as a municipality on March 2, 1860, and became a city in 1904.
Ipswich was also originally nominated to become the State Capital of Queensland, as it was the most prominent city due to it's mining capabilities, however Brisbane was chosen instead due to it having an ocean port (Port of Brisbane), whereas Ipswich relied on barges coming up and downstream on the Bremer River.
Ipswich is also the location of The Workshops Railway Museum to commemorate the first trainline in Queensland from Ipswich to Grandchester, approximately 25km to the west.

Ipswich boomed in the mid 1850's as a coal mining stronghold for the region, river steamers began a regular service on the Brisbane and Bremer rivers and the settlement was granted municipal status in 1860.
It was during this period that Ipswich became the transportation gateway to the rural areas of the State's south-east with steam locomotives bringing wool and grain from the Darling Downs to the port of Ipswich, to be loaded on river steamers for Brisbane.
Ipswich was a city of firsts, apart from the first railway, it was also the location of the first secondary school in Queensland (Ipswich Grammar School built in 1862), the first place to undertake coal mining by underground shafts and after WW2, Queenslands first department store Cribb and Foot, opened in Ipswich.

The European history of Ipswich began with the exploration of the Bremer River in 1826 by Captain Patrick Logan, the commandant of the convict settlement at Brisbane.
This Ipswich owed its foundation to the presence of mineable limestone close to the Bremer River.
Because of the demand for local produce and manufactures, Ipswich was commercially buoyant by the end of the 1870's and enjoyed prosperity during the boom of the 1880's.

Ipswich, the oldest provincial city in Queensland, has a history going back to before the proclamation of the Colony of Queensland on 10 December 1859.
Indeed, a petition signed by 91 residents of Ipswich was received by the Governor of New South Wales on 16 November 1859, seeking to have the area that was then known as Ipswich declared a Municipal Town.
The Municipality of Ipswich was proclaimed on 2 March 1860 and published in the Queensland Government Gazette on 3 March 1860.

The main courtroom and office of the Old Ipswich Courthouse with its impressive sandstone facade was completed in 1859 to the design of Charles Tiffin, who, after Separation of Queensland from New South Wales in that year, became Queensland colonial architect.
The buildings of Ipswich Girls Grammar School, designed in the fashionable Classical Revival style in 1892, are impressive and the view from Queens Park (which has a lovely late Victorian band rotunda and a kiosk with Tourist Information) is excellent for an overview of the city.

The difference between the Queensland Baptist College of Ministries in Brisbane, and Sydney's Morling College is very small these days in terms of theology, emphasis, mission orientation, styles of training, the academic qualifications and outlook of the faculty.
