}{}Stowmarket}} Stowmarket is a small market town situated in Suffolk, England, on the busy A14 trunk road between Bury St Edmunds to the West and Ipswich to the South-East.
Stowmarket lies on the River Gipping, which is joined by its tributary, the River Rat, to the South of the town.
Stowmarket achieved national fame as a result of being frequently mentioned by the broadcaster John Peel who lived nearby until his death in 2004.

 Walk #107: Stowmarket to Ipswich
The first part of the walk south of Stowmarket is not the best, as the river and path winds it's way between industrial buildings, with some associated smells coming from a large ICI plant.
In 1794 the River Gipping was made navigable to boats as the Ipswich and Stowmarket Navigation.
The navigation was first proposed in 1719, but it was not until 1789 that it was seriously considered.

The line is notable for its stations, particularly the grand structures at Stowmarket and Needham Market which are reckoned to be among the finest in Eastern England.
The River Gipping was used for navigation as early as the 12th century and it is likely that the stone for the abbey at Bury St. Edmunds was brought part way up the river and taken overland to Bury.
The 17 mile navigation from Ipswich to Stowmarket was opened in 1793 and lifted barges 90 feet through 15 locks over its length.

Stowmarket is a small market town situated in Suffolk, England, on the busy A14 trunk road between Bury St Edmunds to the West and Ipswich to the South-East.
Other notable residents included political writer William Godwin, who spent time as minister at the Stowmarket Independent Church, Stow has produced two footballers, James Scowcroft who played for the local junior sides and Ipswich Town also Engand international, Matthew Upson was born in Stowmarket and raised in a nearby local village.
Disaster struck Stowmarket on 11 August 1871, when an explosion at a local gun cotton factory claimed twenty-eight lives.
