Between 1997-2001, the Labour government did not lose a single seat of the eight it defended in by-elections.
In the 19 general elections between 1832-1918, the Ipswich constituency was a two-member seat.
By-elections have played an important role in our political history, as shown by a number of examples from recent years.

 Weekly Worker 381 Thursday April 26 2001
Ipswich Socialist Alliance held a public meeting this week as the build-up to the general election gathered momentum.
Ipswich has traditionally been an embattled Labour possession in a sea of blue made up by rural Suffolk and Norfolk.
Ipswich SA has already pulled in some disaffected Labour members and non-affiliated leftwingers and the idea of the rally was to cement ties with these people and encourage others to get involved.

 Channel 4 - Election 2005
Key to their success in 2001 was the squeezing of the Labour vote who only polled 10% in the last local elections.
Here the Labour vote is squeezed and is a tight battle between the Tories and the Lib Dems with very close finishes in the 2001 general and county council elections.
At the 1999 Assembly elections, the Liberal Democrats won comfortably by 42 per cent and they dominated at the Cardiff council elections in 2004.

 Worldpress.org - Australia - Liberal-National Party Lost By-election
The losing candidate, Bob Tucker, a former Liberal state president, was responsible for withdrawing Hanson’s endorsement as a Liberal candidate in her home town of Ipswich before the 1996 federal election.
The election was held in the suburbs of Brisbane, capital of the northern state of Queensland, which is home to One Nation Party founder Pauline Hanson.
Hanson’s lethal weapon in the state elections was to allocate One Nation preferences away from sitting coalition MPs, thus handing a number of marginal seats to the Labor opposition.

Guardian Unlimited Politics Special Reports Ipswich poll result dashes Tory hopes
Hopes that a new leader would change the fortunes of the Tory party were dashed yesterday, when Labour comfortably held on to Ipswich in the first byelection of the new parliament.
Labour's candidate, Christopher Mole, was returned with a 4,000 majority in a relatively high 40% turnout - high, given that it was overshadowed for many voters by Ipswich Town's 1-0 defeat of Italian soccer giants Inter Milan in the Uefa Cup on the same night.
The Tories sought comfort in the fact that Labour's 4,087 majority was well down on the general election margin of 8,081.

The Poll Bludger - Queensland Election 2004
In the elections from 1972 to 1980 it was won by the Liberals, as one would expect from a swinging seat in Brisbane (more-or-less) in a period of coalition hegemony.
Jeff Knuth is not taking his 2001 defeat lying down, hoping to use a new One Nation-lite outfit by the name of the New Country Party (pending a legal challenge by the Old Country Party over their right to use the name) as a vehicle for a comeback with support from Bob Katter.
Liberal nerves were frayed on election night by the specter of a humiliating defeat in one of their three remaining seats.

 E News
Let me just say this: the United States Presidential Election should not be decided on a technicality (this ballot is flawed, the voter was confused, or this absentee ballot doesn't have a postmark) or by a court (supreme or any other).
Ipswich, promoted this year, has been leading a charmed life, and is high up the table.
However, though Ipswich got a great goal early, they missed several great chances later, and sure enough, Arsenal managed to sneak one past the keeper late in the game for a 1-1 final.

Queensland Election 2001 (Current Issues Brief 15 2000-01)
A postscript to the Queensland election-the by-election in Ryan
The result of the election was never in doubt on election night-the ABC commentary team had given the result to Labor within minutes of the start of the television coverage of the counting.
As was the case with the State election, Tucker's discussion of such local-level matters as local crime and congestion of local roads, showed yet again how issues cross borders in a federal system-presumably this was intended to contrast him with the performance of the previous sitting member.

CHRISTIAN PEOPLES ALLIANCE STRONGEST MINOR PARTY IN IPSWICH BY-ELECTION IN ENGLAND
In its first council by-election in Newham in March, the CPA polled 34 percent of the vote.
According to a Press Release put out by the CPA, Dave Cooper had previously stood in the 1997 election for the Liberal Democrats in the Suffolk constituency of Bury St Edmunds, winning over 10,000 votes.

Paul fought the parliamentary seat in the by-election caused by the death of Jamie Cann in November 2001, cutting Labours majority by 4000, and he has been an active campaigner for Ipswich for many years.
Ipswich Conservatives have selected the person who they say will win the next general election for them, at a special general meeting of the Ipswich Conservative Association, held at Clapgate Lane Conservative Club.
Chairman of Ipswich Conservatives Jeffrey Stansfield said ‘Party members selected Paul West because of his local connections, his drive, energy and enthusiasm, his commitment to fighting to get the best deal for Ipswich, and because we simply felt that he was the best person for the job.’

The number of Scottish constituencies will be reduced by 13 at the next election.
I'll also use the 2001 figures for two seats which have changed hands without an election (Wantage, Shrewsbury & Atcham) and for the 59 redefined Scottish seats; this includes one seat, the Scottish Conservative marginal of Galloway & Upper Nithsdale
In effect, Labour will go into the election with 400 MPs out of 645 - a majority of 155.

 Prepared for anything?
Chris Mole MP was leader of Suffolk County Council from 1993 until the Ipswich by-election on the 22nd November 2001.
During the Ipswich by-election I faced a range of questions from the local and national media.
Having led Suffolk County Council and represented a division in the county town of Ipswich I see the work I did on economic, skills, health and community safety agendas as invaluable in developing the contacts within the town that I now represent at Westminster.

The election further confirmed that, like workers in the USA, British workers now face two main big business parties competing for their support.
