At 9.00pm, he was walking along the main Ipswich-Brisbane railway line at the end of Wharf Street in Ipswich when he was struck by a coal train and decapitated.
He was buried as a Roman Catholic in a pauper's grave at the Ipswich General Cemetery on 31 July 1948 under the name "J. Ryan" with Reverend Bergin officiating in the presence of only the cemetery sexton and the undertaker.
But one thing is certain, in the end, the death in Ipswich of James Ryan on 29 July 1948 closed another chapter on the legend of Dan Kelly and his involvement in the infamous Kelly Gang.

The line was built to open the country up to settlement and bring the rich bounty of wool and livestock to the coast.
The line continues in a northwest direction until it reaches Chinchilla (1878, 325km) where it continues in a generally western direction to Miles (1878, 370km), which is the junction station for the Wandoan Branch to the north.
From Miles the line continues across the western downs to Roma (1880, 511km) a large farming and administrative centre, there are five crossing loops on the section and several grain silos.

From this stage a tramway will run to the railway on the brow of the hill, for the purpose of conveying material, such as may be required in the construction of the permanent-way, and that may arrive for transit to the interior, on the completion of the line.
The old wharf railway line still exists and is the oldest section of railway line in Queensland.

The Southern Downs Steam Railway was established in 1995 and has been restoring a C17 class steam locomotive number 971 which was obtained from the Chinchilla Historical Society and donated to the Southern Downs Steam Railway in May 2000.
In June, 2005 996 was acquired by the Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway in Swanbank.
